Something that is kind of proving a little frustrating.

I'm getting to the stage where I'm going be buying doubles, trebles or more of cars I already have - okay fine, no problem ...

but ...

I want to paint them, and for inspiration I'd like to see howo others have painted particular makes and models.

How do you find great paint jobs for particular cars?

I'd love to be able to type in a make and model, and then to find examples

Google images is beyond useless, just typed in "Gran turismo 5" painted "Jaguar XJ13" - the first set of results gives either a green XJ13 or not even the right car!

I search this site, I find some pictures, invariably without the name for the paintchip. It is a bit of a hit and miss method

It would be perfect if I could find a way of browsing particular cars in a range of colours. Finding a car that looks great, and then using this as inspiration to get some stunning looking cars in my garage!! Especially if using DLC paint chips - even though they are pence each - it goes against my very being to use them wastefully!!

Is browsing through the photo thread the only way, or can you suggest a better method ... please

UPDATE: decided to create a list of the main photo threads by make/country/colour/texture

hope someone finds it useful

It's all about your personal taste; in my garage you'll find that 70% of the cars are red or white with white 16 spoke wheels. :p

Ask yourself "what do I like" and paint your car so. ;)

I would suggest the Photo threads and maybe looking through some of the tuning garages. Most of the tuners also paint their cars. I posted a Jaguar XJ13 in a beautiful metalic orange. See the link below.

TP3
Here you go, found these samples.

(Thanks to GT Planet user Monatsende for the hard work behind this)

Also, I prefer this search feature:

Thank you for the Photobucket link - that is very useful!
That helps with the DLC paints enormously

I know what you mean, but occasionally I'll see the way a car has been painted - and think wow, I love it

Often when I piant a car, it'll be yellow or blue ... not very good at seeing the wider alternatives!

great link - thanks
would never have selected that colour - and it looks great!

I have cars colour coded So a Green car with Bronze or Gold wheels is tuned to the maximum all the goodies fitted. Red with white wheels is a RM car with no other tuning, Yellow and Orange wheels is a car with the none pp tuning items fitted, you get the idea.

Of course you can't paint some cars, and that's a bit frustrating, I now have 6 Jag XJ13s and my favourite colour is red. Shocking to the purist but a very pretty car.

Exactly it. There is no "great" paint job. It's whatever you like. My garage looks totally different than his. About 90% of my garage is black cars with black 5 spoke rims. Other 10% is totally different, one is yellow with purple 6 spoke rims.

The GT5 official photostream site is good, changes often and usually Good variety, although they show a lot of the cell phone girl and grey haired railing guy (Julian Assange clone), otherwise some great colour and wheel combos.

Now that is a sensible, logical and brilliant idea!

What a brilliant idea. 👍

I definitely need to try that on any cars I have a few of. :)

What I did when I was new was I paint the car up with the paint that I want but when they actually paint it I never like it...So I go back and paint my car up with another colour. I know its a waste of paint but I have 1000+ paints now so wouldn't matter much.

It's because they show it in that little 3D car display. They should do something different like once you paint the colour it will show you the pic of your car with that exact paint, I don't know something like that anyways.

I really hope they completely re do the paint system in GT6. Not being able to preview your car is wack. However with the current paint chip system I can see why they did it as such.

What I would like to see in GT6 is all the colours available at any time just at different prices. Say 1000cr for solids, 5000cr for metallics, 10,000cr for pearls, 25,000 for mattes, and 50,000cr (or 100,000cr) for chromes. With a preview this colour button please! And of course a livery editor! But I digress.

Best way to look for ideas I found was the photo forum. Many many beautiful jobs done by members here. What would be really cool, but a lot of work, would be a list of cars and when you select a car it brings you to a page with user submitted photos of that car in different colours. Anybody have any ideas as to how this could be achieved?

If you have a handful of cars you drive often try and mix warm and cool colours.

But really there's no "rule" to what colours you should make your car, and if we all just followed what everyone else did everyone would drive white grey and black cars (Oh wait)
Just flick through your colours and if you see something you think will suit the car go with it :)

And to those complaining about the little model that gets painted, often in real life you're lucky to get something shaped like a car, normally you just get a little card to judge whether you want it or not
Think of it as good practice for when you go to respray your real car 👍

Or you could use the USB trick, time consuming, yes. But you will end up with a car you love.

Me, I just love MNP. MMMMMMMMMM

Yes! What my last post was all about! I don't think this will be achieve unless PD actually go into this site and see this post and like it then implement it but I'm sure they are busy trying another new thing about the paint system.

(Wild applause Hoseahs all around Where's the "throw flowers" button?)
LOVE that idea, which means PD will never do it:lol:. I've blown thousands of paints on hundreds of cars, but when I aquire a paint chip that "speaks" to me, I just know. I hear a little voice in back of my mind that says:"OMG that will look GREAT on a 'Stang/Challenger/Camaro etc.. As you buy more cars, that will likely be the primary way you aquire more paints. try to imagine whatever colour you aquire on a different car, or let the colour "inspire" it's own destiny, if you will. I buy from the UCD/OCD in several ways: Do I have everything being presented (sadly, currently I do, takes a little joy out of opening a dealer up, but I digress); are there any especially low-mileage cars (UCD, of course the OCD nullifies that criteria); any multiple paint-combos I don't have (as I've just discovered this forum, there are LOTS of those I can hunt down now); do I just need to burn credits so I don't race "gratis"; paint chips....I will buy ridiculous cars just for a cool chip. You can always go back later and sell off undesirable "extras" lol (though for some stupid reason I feel bad if the "chip donator" I bought and plan to sell caused me to be rewarded for acheiving a multiple of 10 in my garage lol, especially if it was a level that gets a new paint lol the irony!)

I use USB data backup trick when im wanting to know what a colour looks like on a particular car, this is especially good when trying DLC paints you could buy them once & use them a thousand times thanks to the good old USB stick & a trustworthy friend or just a 2nd account. If it wasnt for this method i'd still be using a matte black instead of the far superior DLC GT-Japanese 001.

That would be great!

There is no need to use the usb trick. As far as I know as long as you don't leave GT Auto it wont save. What I do is paint and re-paint my car until I find one I like, use the PS button to quit the game, reload and just use the one chip you like. Saves a lot of time. Also before I even start up my game I usually back up the game to the usb just in case I mess something up. Hope I helped!

^ That's true. It doesn't update car data and save until after you leave GT Auto.

Of course ... how did I not realise that
am I the only one who didn't make that connection? But paint chip count goes down?

what about the paint chip - if you don't update the car, does the paint chip re-materialise?

Find the paint colour you want, quit the game, go back in and go straight to the paintchip you liked.

Otherwise the spent paintchips will remain spent 👍

Last time I checked I have over 2000 and don't worry if I need to use up paint I do.
