Pole Position

How can I get a better pole position in the races? I seem to always be placed last.

There is no "better pole position." Pole position means first place.

Anyway, in Gran Turismo mode, just go through qualification before actually entering the race, and set the fastest time (I don't remember if arcade mode gives you the option to qualify). If you succeed in doing that, you'll start the race in first place.

To get a better place in a race Run a QUALIFYING run if there is one...
Its basically a time trial run. Place first in that qualifying run to get pole position. This isn't available on all races but usually are in championship style races.

Pole position through qualifying is only available in series races. A little to the right of "enter the race" is a scoreboard icon that says "practice" The fastest time from there starts on pole. If the "practise" icon is not there, like in single races, you cannot improve your starting position. I find that cars generally run slower in qualification, and you generally start in the front, so getting first should be of little challenge if you intend to be a factor in the race.
