I voted Japanese, but I want Euro. What is this narrow minded crap.

I live in Canada, so to me, everything is an import. Although we still call American cars domestic because half of them are made here in Canada anyways.

To take this one step further, a few of us over in the Spot Races decided to do some testing.

Take a quick look at this and see if it might produce some insight. If you feel up to it, join in.

Axis vs. Allies

I have to say, this is an utterly stupid thread. Some Japanese cars will kick some American cars' butts. Some American cars will kick other Japanese cars' butts.

Why worry about which country is better? Why not just judge each car on its merits, instead of the national origin of the car company?

And by the way, referring to them as 'Japanese' is fairly offensive.

The Americans tend to make big bodies, to big an engine and to Height cars. With same exiptions like the GT40, vette's and Shelby cobra.
But on Japanen's side...well.

i wouldn't want a Supra if i could afford one. they're played out like mad. give me a WRX or an RX-8.

i agree with neon_duke about the over-generality of the question. there's lots of conditions to take into consideration and different areas of performance that could be measured. for instance, a Toyota Prius is better than a Viper in the gas mileage and insurance. racewise, it probably has a better 0-10 time as well (tiny wheels, less torque).

How are you defining American vs Japanese? Country of corporate headquarters? Country of manufacture? The question is silly and unanswerable. And take the time to type 'Japanese' next time, please...

In the sports car market, I go with the US on the simple basis of numbers. US sports cars, honest sports cars (Corvettes and Vipers), are a dying market kept alive by a limited number of enthusiasts. They're also incredibly fast, expensive, and technologically advanced. The Z06 even puts up amazing numbers in categories like gas mileage. For those who think V8 = 10mpg check it out sometime.

In a more normal car market, I'm a big fan of the Japanese. To give you just one of my reasons... If I go to Chevrolet and pick out a car, say a Malibu, it comes with cassette player and I can upgrade that to a CD player if I care to drop a few hundred. If I go to Honda, I get standard CD and the option to go up to an MP3 player. Too many low- and mid-price US cars (anything under $30,000) are WAY behind the standard for their market. Can you even buy cassettes anymore?

When you get above $30,000, you have to look to find bad cars or bad things about them. Above $50,000 it's even harder. Every car will have their little bits of technology and/or luxury and you pretty much can pick out what you want.

European and Asian markets have certain advantages over American markets regarding emissions, safety, and gasoline quality. The higher quality gasoline in non-American markets combined with lighter environmental restrictions allows for much greater power out of the same car. Neutered by regulations and a poor diet, even the best Japanese and European cars lose a lot of horsepower and gain hundreds of pounds of extra equipment to slow them down further.

When you get back to the older model sports cars (mid-80's and further back), then the contest is pretty much an issue of whether US or European cars are better, because the Japanese simply didn't have what it took to compete. All of you Initial D fanboys aside, the Trueno just isn't a sports car. It's a nice sporty car, but it's no sports car.

well, it depends...imports (silvia, skylines, lancer EVO) or crappy japan-americanized cars(sentra, lancer, g35[piece of crap aint true to skyline heritage])?

Yeah, as a Japanese-American, I find that axis and Japanese crap fairly offensive.

i'll say this once
I am SORRY for putting "Japanese" instead of Japanese
ok?
and bw..... nice knowledge you have ther.e. *considering i'm a 13 year old..*

Oh, I think that becomes plenty obvious within a post or two... or seventy, depending on the speed they're made.

 That's true...

But i think out of the two that you gave a choice of, I'd have to say, in real life, i PREFER the Japanese cars. I wouldn't say one is better than the other though.

and i meant Japanese Brand cars... *nissan, Honda, Toyota * stuffz like that
I loved my Nissan, of course it was built right here in the USA in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
So does that make it an American car of Japanese descent?
Or is it a Japanese/American car?

I truly despise my Mopar Mini-van of Mexican manufacture, and American badging.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that a car is a car is a car.
Some are faster than others. Some will travel further on a gallon of gas, some are safer in accidents. A few even look good. To me, country of maunfacture is not too terribly important. Will the durn thing start, and take me where I want to go?
To paraphrase the "Apple Jacks" commercial:
"We drive what we like."
If I was trying to impress you, it certainly wouldn't be with my '92 Escort, or my '89 Probe.
Neither is beautiful, but when you go out, get in, and turn the key, they both start. Both are also committed to getting me to my destination. I really like that in a car.

"my mule wouldnt go, so i had to put 24 bullets inher"

(not usre bout the number, but its a simpsons quote :p)

Some very good comments comming via the way of neon_duke, bwdemon and Gil, for a thread like this.

Personally I like cars from all around the world, Europe, America, asia. I dont really have an overall favorite country and I dont really despise any manufacturer for no apparent reason. Although I may be more inclined towards British cars, I still love german cars, japanese cars, american cars.

Although id probably end up buying german or Japanese, because of reliablility and fuel costs, Its expensive enough to fuel a 1100cc car in the UK let alone a 4000cc + V8 monster.
