I mute all. More so because my parents want me to but most conversations I don't need to hear any way.

I bought a mic yesterday and I must say most mics I hear have horrible quality, although I did have a short convosation in french yesterday with a french guy. :)

Is there a way to mute all?
I find mics super annoying, people's voices are always louder than my engine sound, it's killing my gameplay.

Normally on PC games there is a button mute all or an option 'never use mic'...
Is there something on the PS3?
Or do I have to mute every person separate, every time a person enters?

Sadly there is no option to mute all. You have to mute each person separately.

Also most people I hear with mics are quiet and I generally can't hear them clearly.

I think the problem is game sound coming through on their mic, so you get like an echo.

For me it highly depends on the lobby I'm in.

If connection is good and people use it with understanding it's a huge improvement over text-chat and helps to speed up communication, mainly between the races. I even found some lobbies that worked in a co-operative manner, where the hunting cars built temporary alliances via chat (like 'draft me', 'I'm gonna overtake on the inside lande now' etc.) to catch up to the leader. That was really good fun.

On the other hand, in some rooms when all people talk at the same time it's hard to understand a single word. Rooms with bad connection seem to suffer even more from chat-usage as it eats up further bandwith.

And of course there are the rooms with utterly rubish talk...

... so it all depends.

No option for sometimes? I use it if the lobby seems like a good racing lobby and everyone is friendly.

I only use my mic when im racing in a private lobby with friends. Other than that its just annoying hearing the prepubescent children scream at eachother

I have one but don't use it. I'm there to race not chat, I hate it when people yap on GT5 and try to mute them as soon as I can.

I use mine most of the time and have never had to mute someone, of course I normally play after midnight so I rarely hear the loud kids.

I mute every mic immediately, the jackass comments on Youtube provide me with all the bigoted ugliness that one could ever desire.

I suppose I just learned that mics actually can be muted be reading this thread.

Could anyone explain how, because this is news to me?

Simple solution google for a list of compatible Bluetooth headsets for PS3 . Pair it up with your ps3 as your probably aware now all voice chat will only come through your headset not your tv or surround sound with game sound effects , if you don't wanna hear them chatting don't wear it and nearly every headset has a mute button anyway so you should get huge battery life before needing to recharge

Oh, but if you don't have a mic, you can't mute people with them?

Dan, anyone can mute anyone. Just click on the offenders name and select mute.

I use a mic, but tend to use it only in rooms with PSN friends. Too many people in this game have exceptionally poor mic etiquette.

As I wrote in another thread, I immediately mute the people who just won't stop talking incessantly or have to do everything through their mics, including having the TV volume up so high that the mic picks up every sound effect from the game, eating, drinking, burping, coughing, sneezing, doing bong hits, yelling at their kids/wife/girlfriend/dog, carrying on personal conversations with someone in their house, etc.

I guess I'm just used to playing online with an older, more mature crowd from my flight sim days. They knew how to use comms proficiently and courteously.

In this game, many need to just learn how to lower the different sounds in the game through the Options menu and they wouldn't have to crank their TV so loudly, to try and hear the chat.

I have race sounds, menus sounds, etc. lowered so I can hear the comms without having to blast my TV sound. They also need to learn how to be courteous. When someone is talking, don't talk over them, let them finish and then speak. Basically, you have to have conversations on game mics, the same way you would in person. 👍

I have one but I never really find myself using it unless there are another mature adults talking and racing properly.

1 and 4.

i mute straight away, half the time its not even a conversation and its just noise!

hopefully in the next update or so, they should have it so you can mute all and have an option to mute new people who join a lobby while your in a race as well....

I don't have one and I usually mute them. Often the voices are blurry and there always seems to be some crazy dog barking in the background.

I rarely have issues with people with mics other than those who have conversations with their wives or whatever, then I mute them. Occasionally you get someone who has a bad connection and their sound quality is terrible or their battery is running low.

I use a wired USB headset since the quality is so much better.
I use the mic all the time to let other drivers know when I'm in their blind spot or if they're faster than me to pass on my left or right. Shooting the **** is half the fun online.

When i use my mic it is normally when i am with 3 or 4 of my friends and we're just messing around randomly and lag isn't a problem. However, when i play for real with lots of people, they get muted and my mic is out so there isn't as much lag and i can actually concentrate without having to listen to some 4 year old talk about this awesome game he had in Call of Duty.

That's my 2 cents.

I have a mic but i don't bother to have a conversation with 12 year old arguing about the little things and swearing every 3rd word they speak.
But it's nice to hear an intellectual conversation now and then :)

That's my 2 cents.
Same here

Since I often race NASCAR online on GT5, having a mic helps with communicating with the other people during the race to tell them if you are passing high or low, however as has been previously stated it helps a lot if the room is full of mature adults...
