Personally, I believe that GT5 should be moddable as there are a lot of talented people out there who can effectively reduce, or even remove the flaws in the game. It will also probably take some load off PD's back, although it might affect them financially (I'm not a marketing expert though, so that's just my opinion anyway:rolleyes:)

Your thoughts?

We will be flooded with anime-themed pink monsters built by 11yo engineer-wannabes.

Sorry if I am being sarcastic. But I work with users support. Specially the ones that erase data from database in order to customize it.

Leave it to the pros.

Leave it in the hands of the developer. Its up to them to fix it. Besides no game will be 100% perfect. Nowadays they can update games via internet so give them the chance to fix their own flaws. Plus you might get into legal issues with something like that. In fact, I don't know one PS game that will allow this.

No. Too easy to cheat if cars can be changed by the user. I want to know that I've got the same car as everyone else.

how the hell do you mod a PS3 game?

I'd just be happy with a custom events creator...

For numerous reasons, I wouldn't want it. While it'd be fun to play designer, and say, insert an E30 M3 after working on it for months, there's a reason the people who are getting paid to do that stuff already do it. The juice isn't worth the squeeze; for the awesome community-created content we might get, there'd be far, far more sub-par quality stuff floating all over the place.

Forza's online marketplace.:ouch:

Depends... are we talking hacks or developer-supported mods as seen with the likes of Unreal Tournament 3?

I'd happily go with either to be honest. The first method is fine by me, other people can ruin their copy of GT5 as long as it doesn't affect my game at all, because I'm not interested. The second method I'd be interested in. There would be a lot of crap around which I could easily ignore, but there would also be a few gems and it'd make for some fun community projects.

Not that it should be a priority though. Developer stuff will nearly always outdo 3rd party efforts, unless we have a few professionals prepared to spend time on it and come up with some good quality mods.

The way FailOverflow and GeoHot are going, the answer could well be "Yes, even if we dont want it!".

If I was able to mod it, I wouldn't make every car with 20k bhp, I would create new marques for the game, Porsche & Koenigsegg are on my mind! Also more sportcar racers from the likes of ALMS, which Forza 3 has!!

^This^ Though you'd probably suffer from licensing issues:nervous:

I am a sound designer for various games. If GT5 were moddable, I could release realistic sound patches for all those ear-pain inducing cars currently in.

No, people would created retarded cars with near zero weight and massive hp that isn't even close the realms or realism, oh wait PD already did that with the X1.

How would this work? I know how it works on pc but I don't know how it would work on the ps3

Judging by the average mod (of all the ones I've come across) I would say that it would probably ruin online (except "my lounge") if mods were allowed there. Offline is a different story, but still, your average modder is over-ambitious, short-sighted, too eager to move onto the next big thing and generally lacks the same vision as those behind original product.
I hate trawling through thousands of 🤬 mods in order to find the gems, and only to find they conflict anyway...

I'd love to be able to go through the game an clean up all the things I have a problem with, but for the sake of online play I think it would be better if it wasn't possible.

When I think back to games on the PC like Grand Prix Legends or Sports Car GT, the user-made additions extended the life of the product for years beyond their expected shelf-life and dramatically enhanced the experience for the gamer. In the case of Sports Car GT, the community that built up around it took an average arcade racer and made it one of the most wide-ranging and realistic (if you wanted it to be) racing games of the time - 1930s Auto Unions through Can-Am to modern drag racers, and everything in between.

Those were PC games though, it won't happen on the PS3 unless a game is specifically designed for user-additions Little Big Planet-style. While I would love it to happen, it would destroy the potential profit from future DLC.

But those two games you mentioned are rare in the sense that they had a relatively large modding community (that is, of the player base, a large proportion were into modding it for their own purposes, and that naturally grew into more ambitious projects.) The other thing is that it is actually very difficult to mod those games, and it's taken years for the standard to be lifted to where it is today - most of the modders that are left are old hands, a select few who know the "secrets" to modding the game.
You only need look at the Targa Florio circuit for GPL (and the associated hacks and patches to make it work, all automated, of course) to see the level of professionalism that lies behind the recent mods. Of course, the Targa is currently being ported to rFactor et al....

Many PS3 games CAN be modded. I have Unreal Tournament 3, and it is moddable.

Many? UT3 is the only one and you can only mod it, because the engine, with it's editor, is also on the PC.
