I don't like the sound sample that PD have used for transmission whine in GT5, it really grates on me & I can't stand to hear it. In real life transmission whine sounds lovely, but not so in GT5 in my opinion. I hope they replace the sound entirely in GT6 for something more realistic & less harsh on the ear.

How do you feel about the sound sample they used for this in GT5?

EDIT: I'm referring to the sound that gets added to all cars when you install a fully customizable transmission (gearbox), not the engine noise in general.

I agree with you 110%.

I can't help but whenever I hear the whine it reminds me of

Yes, I also do not like it... I think they did very well in R3E, where you can hear everything the trannie produces...

I personally like the sound. I'm not always in cockpit view but, when I am, it's refreshing compared to the exhaust note. I really wish the super/turbocharger noises were more realistic, or given an option to install a gear drive on the motor as a mock performance upgrade just for the sound. Something about that tone really sounds nice.

I like it, but it needs to be quieter. I can't Stand it when I flip to the reverse view in a muscle car and only hear a loud whine.

I agree 100%, they totally nailed it, spot on! PD needs to hear this;

That's car noise done properly. Sweet as!

Fixed that for you:)

Indeed, it's another area where PD just looped in a generic sound byte. It's nowhere near accurate for any car in the game, nor for the wide variety of cars.

I dun care. :sly:

And Master__Shake_, nice avatar

You're the first person to really say anything about it, I'm glad someone gets it.

I avoid the fully customizable transmission because of it's sound. Can't stand it.

For all the benefits in acceleration, that's a bad reason to not use the custom transmission. If you flip and set up the gears correctly, you will eliminate shift lag and improve acceleration on the corners as well as the straights. My signature has a guide for 1/4 mile transmissions but, if adapted for top speed on a specific track, is almost a sure guarantee to improve lap times. I should've posted it in the tuning section to help the guys that use cookie cutter tunes without knowing the benefits of stretching gears.

Can't stand it. I too tend to avoid the thing out of general principle, and a lot of the time where I bothered with hybriding (in GT3 and GT5) was for no other reason than to tune gears without having to put up with it. It wouldn't be so bad if there was at least some other transmission noises modeled besides the whine, but as it stands it just makes some cars literally undriveable to me.

So true! Can't drive NASCARs because it's so loud in cockpit view, & many other race cars are a no-no for me too. The whine is so grating on the ear! :ouch:

I've always been against hybriding, but if the whine can really be removed from cars whilst using the fully customizable gears at the same time, I think you might just have converted me. ;)

I don't like it either and it sucks when you ''must'' equip it on old muscle cars, sometimes, the stock exhaust for these cars is the best sounding one but if you equip the race tranny you'll only hear that annoying whine.

I agree with most. It is a little loud, but appropriate. Listen to any road race car with a full on racing gearbox from a cockpit view on youtube and you will hear this same noise. Also, the Problem is most of us fit the adj racing trans on road cars making it that much more pronounced. Lately i have fitted my road cars with the close ratio gearbox and have enjoyed the change.

Listen closely to all the changes in pitch and little variations in the transmission sounds and tell me if that's what you hear in GT5, with a straight face. GT is nothing like this, it's just a generic, same for every car, whining noise, unworthy of a 2013 racing sim.

Then listen to this video and you'll see how both engine and transmission sounds can be done on a racing sim:

I dont like how if i install an adjustable transmission, the whine is louder than the engine.

It is kinda complex problem and it is all about how pd wants to make the sounds come out from speakers. Essentially the problem is that for some bizarre reason pd is trying to make the cars sound just like they sound in poor onboard videos that are filmed with low quality microphones. This naturally makes the gear whine more noticable simply because the mic pics it up too well compared to the rest of the car sounds.

This problem is evident in the whole way pd makes the car sounds. It is all about making the cars sound exactly like poor onboard video cams with poor mics. When you go over the kerb the car sound is decreased just like in real onboard vids where the camera adjusts itself, when you are near other cars the car sound is decreased (same thing) and then obviously how pd tries to match the poor quality of the mics used for onboard videos.

The bad thing is that none of these "effects" make the game any better or sound better. It just makes the game sound even worse. In fact it makes the game sound horrible. But in order to fix this huge problem pd has with sounds they need to change their approach completely. Forget the sound quality of poor mics and try to make it sound like it sounds to human ear! The sad fact seems to be that pd will just push a lot more towards the cheap mic direction in gt6 if the gt6 academy demo was any kind of indicator. A lot of the problems were made even more audible instead of being solved...

As for the actual gear whine... It is caused by straight cut teeth in the transmission. Road cars use teeth that are not cut straight but at angle. That is called helical gears. Straight cut teeth has little less power loss than helical gears but straight cut gears also produce a lot more noise. So for racing car you want all that engine power transmitted to the rar tires while with road cars you don't care about the last few percents of poewr if it makes you deaf.

So for pd this would be easy to fix. Offer adjsutable gearboxes where you can choose whether you want whiny gearbox or silent gearbox (+rear end) with little more power losses. In other words offer adjustable gearboxes with both straightcut and helical gears.

You forget that GT5 wasn't made in 2013, it was released in late 2010. That means there's been 3 years of improvement they've been working on for GT6. They aren't going to redo every single car's soundbytes when they won't be making any profit for it. Not enough of the community would shell out $4.99 for an overhaul update of audio, so they'll be tweaking it for the new game. Really, I wasn't expecting this much DLC for this game anyhow, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with for the next.

I see what your saying. It's not the argument of how loud, but more so that if there is going to be a pronounced transmission wine, at least adapt it correctly. Nice examples btw.

No profit in it? The game will do a $Half Billion in sales easy. I don't think it's too much to ask for at least the brand new cars, if not all the premiums to have proper engine sounds, let alone proper transmission, downshifting etc. And why should we pay for an audio update, it's a core element to every racing game? It should be included.

Exactly. Transmission whine is in every racing car and should be in any car with a racing transmission installed, just get the proper sound, not a generic whining noise. The examples show you what's possible and it is possible to get them pretty accurate. In GT you don't need 1000 transmission samples for example. Any car with "custom transmission" would have the same sound sample. For race cars you only need to do 4 or 5 versions or maybe less and it would cover the whole gamut from one end to the other. If the custom transmission whine is good, I'd like to be able to install it on any race car too, not just be stuck with default tranny.

No major video game designer/producer will ever release a DLC for free that they could easily make money from. You have to assume all DLC will hurt the wallet. The easiest way to "fix" the problem would be to add audio sliders to reduce/increase general sound volumes from the car like: Engine, Transmission, Tire, Supercharger, etc. That's the closest way I could see in getting a free update for this, but again - fixing a 3 year old game is not high on their priority list.

I agree about fixing it for GT5, but again, it's a core issue and not something that should be sold, it should be part of the basic package. Let's hope it's fixed for GT6.

i think the guys of Need For Speed have done it pretty good, compared to GT5, it's not the best, but from the sound, the game is awesome, and btw, the handling physics are completely ****

Yes, Shift is very inmersive thanks to the sound but R3E and IRacing are on another level. Anyway, Shift 2 can be tweaked to handle decently, if you enjoy the game, don't give up.
