During the end of the year interviews from Japanese gaming magazine GeMaga, Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about his company a bit in this ever changing industry. Of course, he talked quite a bit about Gran Turismo. The first interesting bit is that GT5 may not make it out in 2009 afterall, he says they 'would have wanted GT5 to come out in 2009'. 2009 is definitely still the target time frame, but they may not make it. He says its not due to any lack of effort, with the excepetion of 17 overseas business trips, the studio has been 'confined', hard at work every day.

He then lets loose a bombshell. He says that while Polyphony is exclusively in charge of car games, the company wants to make a new, distinctly different game. So could Polyphony be expanding their horizons and entering some new territory? Polyphony's notorious attential to detail is unparalleled, so a new game from them would definitely be interesting.

They'd create a new division for whatever game they decide to go and make. They won't take resources away from GT5.

On a old IGN (I think it is IGN) KZ said that he would like to make an F1 game...
I sure hope it's a rally game though, ther's no rally sims around

I really doubt it will be a CAR game, they currently are making CAR games, but now they would like to create something new... If they would create a RALLY, or some Other racing game, they would just include it in GT5. So they will make a new game like Action Adventure or some new RPG.

I think they would make something like wipeout, i doubt they would make another car game.

Kaz always wanted to make movies, I really doubt next game will be not in any form a RACE game.

i also doubt it would be a racer, if they were going to make a new game. If they wanted to diverse, they wouldn't do another racer.

The type of game it would be though, would be anything at this point in time.

Good find by the way. ;)

It's probably gonna be an RPG as Kaz has said he wants to make one, but worry about that after GT5 is in my hands with damage modeling that means something and is not just cosmetical, dynamic weather and all major manufacturers are in the game (Lambos and Bugattis are still missing).

How many people does PD employ?

If rally and gravel/sand physics engine gets the same attention as circuit racing and tarmac engine, then GT5 will be game of my life.

When you say "Polyphony Digital," every avid gamer immediately thinks "Gran Turismo." And of course, that association will only strengthen when Gran Turismo 5 launches (hopefully, at the end of this year).

However, prepare yourselves for a very large and intriguing bit of news: during end-of-year interviews and according to PS3Center.net, GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the future of his company, and obviously, that included GT5. First up, he said that while 2009 was still the target time frame for the launch, "it may not make it," although not due to any "lack of effort." So that's kind of a downer but that's hardly the biggest news because Yamauchi also said that although Polyphony exclusively handles car games, they do want to try their hand at "a new, distinctly different game." What this could be, we haven't the foggiest idea, but now we're very excited to learn more about it. Yamauchi is one of those guys who can excel at just about any game project, even if he hasn't been exceedingly diverse. Like Hideo Kojima, this guy is a perfectionist, so anything he attempts should be worthy of our attention. Oh yeah, and what if his next game is also a PlayStation 3 exclusive...? Hmm...

Anyway, we will now be anxiously awaiting Yamauchi's decision, and if he really does decide to head in an entirely new direction after GT5, we'll be on pins and needles in anticipation of the announcement. That's for damn sure.

Maybe PD feel that the GT series has aleady had a lot of mileage and they want to show off thier talents in other areas. Whether these 'new projects' will be in any way car related is anyones guess, but you can probably guarentee that it would a damn high quality game especially on the visual side of things.

Maybe PD should try thier hand at making an FPS!

What do you recon PD has in the pipeline?... what other stuff would like to see PD tackle?

I think an MMORG style Gran Turismo world / city would be amazing, like TDU style. Some people on the net have even suggested they should do a flying simulator to rival MS. Seems like they have clearly flushed GT Mobile down the toilet if they are already thinking about other things.

Robin.

To most people who speak the english language this would be understood as NOT being a racing game. Why are people wishing for rally games?

Because people always wish for what they know won't happen.

KY has said many times he would like to do a different game altogether, why is it such news now?
