Yeah but if your counting two groups of three your still counting six balls, so it's still six, you've just split it into two groups, so alternatively you can just count one group of six balls. No difference, your still counting six balls however you do it ;).

It's not, the wording of the question sees to that. If you count six groups of one ball each the maximum number you've counted to is 6. If you count two groups of 3 balls each the maximum number you've counted to is only 3.

Right, I actually get whay your saying now, six groups of 1 means you've counted to six, one group of six also means you've counted to six but you never count more than three by having two groups of three, there's still six balls but you never count higher than three.

Your explanation is right, it's just not he way peoples minds (well mine at least) automatically think when working out something to do with counting numbers.

Unless you count in Base2 (binary)... :D Then it's never more than 1... And, seeing as this is just apparently an exercise in counting in Base3 (trinary), it's just as valid...

1 = 1 = 1
2 = 2 = 10
3 = 10 = 11
4 = 11 = 100
5 = 12 = 101
6 = 20 = 110
7 = 21 = 111
8 = 22 = 1000

Oh no... We're going to have the full canon of cue-based game jokes. Makes me baulk at the thought. I bet this thread was just a plant in the first place - this kind of thing drives me potty... amp - you've got a screw loose.

Hey, the thread was dead, so we put a spin on it. I can't help it, I'm hooked on these puns, they make me jump. TM's not here, but when he shows up, he'll have it in his pocket.

These jokes seem chalked up to me, but I'd like to cushion the blow a little by taking Amp out of the frame for moment and saying just how much of a (John) parrot exigeracer has been just now.

OK, give it a rest guys, we don't want to balls it up, although it's good to see we can pool all these jokes together, if I've red it correctly.

This will be top spinning out of control soon if we don't kick this foul habbit, but theres a triangle of members who go white at the thought.

Makes me blue just thinking about it. And, cards on the table, I've chipped in everything I can now.

That was a nice shot in the dark, I bet that'll put some wind up your (Joe) Swail's but you need to be careful your jokes don't go static.

Well, much though I get a kick out of this, I'm off for a nap. I need the break anyway.

I've got to play a safety and go, I have work in the morning and I'd better be in bed before 01:47. So I conceeed this match but I leave without feeling like I've been put under too much of a crucible.

If you're playing pool (8 Ball) on a standard table with 7 reds, 7 yellows and a black ball and you pot a ball on the break (not the black) but you don't see the colour of the ball you potted, what's the minimum number you have to count to to ascertain what colour of balls you should now go for?

There is a fairly obvious answer to this and possibly a few more less obvious answers.

edit: Corrected wrongly-worded question.
Are you talking about Snooker, or regular 8-ball.
In regular 8 ball there are seven stripes, and seven solids.
They come in seven different colors.
1 & 9 are yellow
2 & 10 are blue
3 & 11 are red
4 & 12 are purple
5 & 13 are orange
6 & 13 are green
7 & 15 are maroon.
Then there are the black and white balls.
So, the least number of balls you have to count is one. That being if you Scratched or Fouled on the break.
The most would be 14 as you check if each solid has a corresponding stripe in the same color.

8 Ball. In the UK normal 8 Ball uses different balls from 9 Ball. 7 red balls, 7 yellow balls and one black. Like this:

I think we need a CLARIFIER. What's the DIRT DEMAND? Are we all FOAMING at the mouth, here? Do we need a REAGENT to test the RESIDUAL waters? If things get any more CONTAMINATED, we'll need some SANITIZER and a good SEQUESTERING AGENT to FILTER our troubled waters. Perharps the right amount of SODIUM BICARBONATE or SODIUM BISULFATE should take care of any TURBIDITY, and make the ALGAE and HARD WATER turn into SOFT WATER. So, no more big splashes, or you'll FLOOD THE BALLAST.

BALANCED WATER is what we need in this thread about Pool. So, let us bring it to the BREAKPOINT CHLORINATION, and OXIDIZE this MUD POOL. Don't make the moderators break out the bottle of CHLORINE and wash this one away!

Oh, god damnit! I used the wrong pool terms!!! :banghead:

The yellow and red balls are the international competition rules. They are what are used in pro tournament games. They are also what those evil victorians over the river use!

That's just plain wRong!
With a capital "R".
Billiard balls are supposed to be multi-colored.
Allison Fisher just played in the International 8-ball tourney, and the balls were as I listed them.

Solid.

You're cut. If I keep it fresh I'll have this thread in the bank, but I need to find a pun with 'solid' for a perfect combo.

In fact, three kinds of billiard shots in one sentence is a pretty fine combo.

Don't worry, it's sunk in now. You can chalk it up to reading error. Though with all these bad puns (my favorite type) a mod may come in and tell us to wrap it up.

[sarcasm]And every one knows it's stripes and solids, not red and yellow...[/sarcasm]

We use both over here, but it's not wrong at all, it depends which game your playing some games require the numbered balls some don't.

The jokes in this thread are Ebdoning away.
