Very confronting film - to borrow a phrase from Giles, it's not necessarily particularly enjoyable to watch but it is an extremely well crafted film, well written and acted - a very interesting exploration of the psychology of legal and illegal drug addiction.
My sister bought me a 2 dvd pack that had pi and Requiem for a dream, for Christmas. I watched both. I watched Requiem about a month earlier and think it ruined the experience of watching pi. I really liked requiem (i would like to watch it again soon to remind myself of the story). The depictions of persons after drug use is VERY realistic. I got in a serious car accident in october and the scene where the old woman is taken to the hospital is freaky. Especially when the keep saying "what is your name. are you aljdsflajh. youll be alright. you are at the hospital now." then Darren arofonsky does very good directing of the camera shots for this scene and others. You find yourself looking up in her place.
I didnt like pi as much. I thought the story was rather fake. I know a bit about math and if a movie is based on math I would like the whole story to make sense. The same music and many of the same shots are used in this movie. (I know pi was made first.)
Overall I liked arofonsky's directing style. I would like to see more of his movies (if there are more).

-Amelie - Actually really entertaining. funny, clever, great direction. I enjoyed the europeaness of the film.
-Yojimbo - great, seen before but wanted to prepare myself to see "Sanjuro"
-Rashoman - Havent watched yet, still have it. I predict it is great just like the rest of the kurosawa films I have seen. Seven samurai is amazing!!!! go rent it!!!
-Six-string Samurai - indy flick, probably made for less then 10k, lol. clever and funny. the story and the charm of the main character gets old quickly. brief overview of plot: in the 1950s the soviet union nuked the USA. most of the USA became a wasteland. the main city is now lost vegas. Elvis was crowned the king of lost vegas. It is 2000 (or so, forgot), the king just died. Radio waves go out welcoming all elvis, rockstar wannabes to come tryout to become the new king of lost vegas. the main character is a guy who plays killer guitar. he also has a big a$$ samurai sword. he is making his way to lost vegas throughout the film. He runs into various people trying to kill him. he woops their ass in stylistic fight scenes. The choreography is actually not bad. the main character has funny one liners. he wears nerdy looking glasses and is a great character. then stuff happens, I dont want to get into it. Its pretty hilarious actually, but not for a full length film.
-Ghost world - good movie. based on a comic. appears to be brought to life very authentically. buscemi, the coolest guy ever, is in this movie.
