So, you are telling me that, in 275 pages of car suggestions, not a SINGLE of those is directed towards the PINNACLE of 70s motoring?!? Come on people! But fear not, promised child, redemption is still possible.
Let me introduce:
Porsche 914/4 1,7 1970
(or VW-Porsche 914/4 1,7 1970 depending on market)
Full story on the 914: https://www.stuttcars.com/415820-2/
”Ok Korvregn, we get it. The 914 is hotter than a cup of coffee in the Sahara”, all of GT Planet sing in choir. ”But why not the flat six 914/6, or at least the later four cylinder 2,0? Are they not better choices for a racing game?”
Fair point all of GT Planet, but let me explain.
The 1970-1971 914/4 is 50 kg lighter than later models (clocking in at only 900 kg empty), and is even more a better example than the 914/6 of the collaboration between two of the worlds most iconic car companys.
PLUS, the 914/4 would possibly take perfect advantage of two of the coolest features of GT7; the engine swap and the widebody modification. So the lightest base model can get a sweet 3,6 flat six from the 964 RS. Combine that with the sexy wide bodywork from the 914/6 GT and tell me you don’t need new underwear.
That means we can have THIS:
But at the same time also have THAT:
Oh baby, behave.
But there is more to it.
The 914 is PERFECT for Gran Turismo for several reasons. Except that it is a drivers car, with awesome handling, near perfect weight distribution (it is mid engined and RWD), it also fits most types of loud critics:
”We want more race cars!”
-Have you seen the racing history of the 914? In 1970 a 914/6 GT won the GTS class at Le Mans 24h, AND finished sixth place total, only beaten by two Porsche 917, a Porsche 908, Ferrari 512 and checks notes a Corvette C3. That means it beat several 911s, a Porsche 908, a Ferrari 312P, Alfa Tipo 33 etc.
Proving its reliability and speed, it also took ALL of the podium places (yep, 1, 2 and 3) in the extremely difficult 86 hour-race Marathon de la route at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and Südschleife. The regulations for that race is very specific and tough, making it a remarkable victory.
”We want quirky cars!”
-Yeah, this is a bit quirky and maybe a bit weird, with a lot of cool. Fits perfect with the Gran Turismo DNA!
”We want more classic cars!”
-Yeah, me to buddy.
”We want more open cars!”
-Yep, this is a Targa with a removable roof. Imagine cruising Grand Valley with the top down in VR. Make it happen now!
”We need more Porsches in the game!”
-Duh. Of course we do.
”There is already too many Porsches in the game!”
-Well, this is also a VW sooo… everybody happy!
”I want something to tune!”
-This will be VERY tune-friendly.
It is time for the 914 to move to the spotlight and to the real driving simulator. Lets make it happen PD!
