It's very hard to choose the best race car in the world. Where would you compare it to and so on. The one and only reason to many people is simple, how much wins have it achieved. I wouldn't ho with that way at all, what if it hasn't allowed to achieve as many wins as it could have been able to?

Porsche 917/30 is one of these race cars, what I would say is the best too. It started with 917 K then came 917/10 and finally 917/30 which was the most powerful, the lightest and the fastest of those 917's. 917/30 had one big problem, the response of gas. It was very hard to control because when you escaped from turn the car wouldn't immediately launch like rocket there were also too less horsepowers for Porsche, only 900... They thought that we have to put V-16 there or add some turbos, after all they took it to one engine preparer. They installed a new electronical fuel injection system to it and changed the placement of turbos. That helped a lot and Porsche 917/30 wasn't suffering for "gas-lag" anymore, and bhp were increased at the same time to total of 1100bhp!!! A real beast I think.

In the late 60's Porsche 917/30 run LeMans and won it twice. But after that FIA seemed that Porsche 917/30 is way too good comparing to other LeMans runners, so they added a new rule to LeMans. The engine displacement had to be decreased from 5.0 liters to 3.0 liter, that was the end of Porsche's 917/30 succesful era in LeMans.

Next year from that stupid rule change in LeMans Porsche moved to Can-Am -series with that 917/30. It won the championship in one year if I remember right and many races too. But then it happened again. This time SCCA tightened the fuel-economy rule so that it blocked Posrche 917/30 away. It was the death of two well-known race series and in the end it was sadly Porsche 917/30 death too. It was probably the only race car in the world which were so good that it had to be "killed". Nobody knows what it could have been achieved if it hasn't been punished because it was too good.

The engine of this car was 12-cylinder flat engine with twin turbochargers. It made bhps from about 600bhp to 1100bhp depending the year. Displacement were between 5.0 liters to 5.4 liters.

What do you think about Porsche 917/30? Do you think it was the best race car in the world too?
