Ditto. I've completely lost interest over the past five years. Francois in a GT3RS would certainly re-catch my attention.

This car would certainly make tarmac rallying a lot more interesting.

Edit: Homeforsummer... understand what you mean, rallying (in particular, the quality of the TV coverage) has gone down hill. But there's some great rallying on TV this year if you have SKY. Eurosport have the IRC with live stage coverage on a Friday night, and almost all the footage is in car... their coverage of the Monte was very good. And Motors TV have the WRC this year... for Rally Sweden about 50% of the coverage was in car and it looked immense... flat in 6th down narrow roads of solid ice.

Yeah, the coverage has been pretty poor recently. The peak was in around 2000-ish when one of the terrestrial channels covered every single rally virtually in full, with at the least a one-hour highlights every single night and even some live stages during the day. Was the first year of "virtual spectator" too, I remember watching some stages on the computers in my sixth form!

I think it's just the cars though. They no longer excite me. They're too far removed now from the road cars they're "based" on. Again for me, the mid-nineties was the peak for rally cars, and it gave us some great road cars - like your old Impreza Series McRae.

It needs to go back to basics. We need cars like the Porsche that Delecour wants to compete in, and a mix of cars. But I'm getting off-topic...

$630,000, heh? The Hybrid-part probably makes up a nice chunk of that price, but it will still sale, esp. w/ the Porsche name.

Exactly.

There are always people around who won't even blink at that sort of price. Fills up Porsche's coffers, and then they can bring the hybrid techology down to the 911 and Cayman at a more realistic price.

Porsche has confirmed that its 918 Spyder hybrid supercar concept will be put into production. The dramatic concept will be an indirect successor to the Carrera GT, sitting at the top of the Porsche range as both its halo hypercar and the ultimate showcase of its hybrid powertrain technology.

The Porsche supervisory board confirmed today that the decision had been made following "overwhelming response from the public and customers to the concept study".

The Porsche 918 Spyder was the star of the Geneva motor show in March. The mid-engined two-seater achieves headline figures of 78mpg and 70g/km of CO2. It hits 62mph from a standstill in 3.2sec and can go on to reach a top speed of 198mph.

The car is powered by a 500bhp V8 petrol engine - a development of the RS Spyder racer's 3.4-litre unit - and a pair of electric motors with a combined output of 218bhp. The front wheels are driven by one electric motor and the rear wheels by the engine and the other motor, making the 918 Spyder four-wheel drive.

Porsche says the car is capable of a sub-7m30s lap around the Nurburgring, quicker than the Carrera GT. It can also travel up to 16 miles on battery power alone and is a plug-in hybrid. It is similar in width and height to the Boxster and Cayman, but is much wider than both of these. The body and shell are made from carbonfibre-reinforced plastic, but there is also extensive use of magnesium and aluminium. The concept weighs 1490kg.

Porsche had initially been cagey about its chances of production. Potential customers were able to sign declarations of interest from Geneva and the most recent reports claimed more than 2000 of these had been received. The hybrid supercar may end up being priced at around 500,000 euros (ÂŁ420,000) – eclipsing the ÂŁ321,000 Carrera GT.

The concept will be at Pebble Beach next month where customers are expected to be able to formally express their interest in the car, and possibly even place deposits.

"Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts," said CEO Michael Macht. "We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."
 
Hum, no screaming, big displacement, fuel thirsty V10 at this time, but still an impressive techniological achivement, if and only if, deliver the figures they're promising. Also, I'm not very good at maths but 500.000 euros is a lot of money to begin with, it must be awesome to impress the crowd against the forthcoming F70. Time will tell.

I'm disappointed they are using boring old battery hybrid technology. The Williams flywheel idea sounds fantastic and I've only read it being used on the Porsche race cars at Nurburgring 24Hrs!

I'd be surprised if it doesn't exceed the quoted performance figures... it's got the equivalent of over 700bhp and weighs around 1,500kg, so 0-60 in 3.2s and c.200mph sounds achievable.

The mpg and CO2 ratings however are the usual hybrid 'fix'... in theory, it might be possible to achieve them, but in reality you'll get nowhere near them.

And Porsche clearly demonstrated at the recent 24h Nurburgring that they can make new technollogy work - with the Hybrid 997 leading the race until a few hours before the finish.

Even beyond the looks and outright performance potential the 918 is really interesting in so far as it may be the sign of things to come for supercars... IMO, for both political resons and simple physics, it's unlikely manufacturers will be able to continue to keep moving the performance game along at the same magnitude they have over the past 20 years.

Used to be that the halo supercars were significantly faster than other models in a manufacturers range. But now there are models lower down their product ranges that are incredibly fast... the 458 is almost as fast as the Enzo, the 997 GT2RS is significantly faster than a Carrera GT and has performance figures that are already superior to those given for the 918.

Along with the limited production runs, breakthrough technollogy may be the way they justify the significantly higher price points these models command.
 
I will not make it 500000€, it is just above budget.

Do not understand I'm starting to like Porsche: 918 Spyder, GT2 RS (to me this one also seems better then the Carrera GT on paper, edit and Stotty)

They promise: CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km and a fuel consumption of 94.1 mpg /3.0 litres/100 km that is better then a Smart.

You will see nothing else anymore in Beverly Hills.

I recognize it can actually exceed the figures they're adversting, but the mpg ratings are just unreal, if you got the money to drive a fantastic car as the Carrera GT spiritual successor, you wouldn't care about saving fuel, or the environment, just give it the gas and see how that small V8 performs. :D

Also, using that car as a plug-in hybrid sounds just like an unintended joke, seriously, who in the world would drive that car in an everyday basis to justify the use of the hybrid technology? :confused: I mean, this awesome Porsche is just the first step to bring the hybrid technology to other members of the supercar club, they just aren't practical, useful in your daily commute, just a fantastic piece of engineering built to show the power of Porsche technical skills. Putting a hybrid powertrain on it is just weird and unconceivable to me, but that's what happen to all innovative and fantastic achievements and the 918 just picture it perfectly, honestly, I don't know what to think about this car, will it be good as the Carrera GT? Probably yes.

I used the 458 as an example and I could have named any number of cars that are in the same performance league... eg; McLaren MP4, Porsche GT2RS, Porsche Turbo S (0-60 in 2.9, 0-100 in 6.8). All of these models have performance numbers in the same league as the last generation of Supercars.

Don't forget the new Pagain in development, C9 is it? I forget what it's called! As an off-sider too, the C7 Corvette is due in a couple years. Nobody gives the C6 credit for how well it's aged.
 
For me, a 'supercar' is mid-engined and has no lower models... so Enzo, Carrera GT, Zonda, McLaren F1, Jag XJ220 etc.

Personally, I don't see the Gallardo, Corvette or 458 as supercars, no matter how fast they are.

Having a flywheel hybrid is all well and good in racing, but for driving on the road, it has the disadvantage of losing the stored energy while the car is sat in the garage, batteries don't have that problem and as such, are a better solution.
