Porsche (Dürheimer) said they are going to stop using the Mezger GT1 block and start using the 9A1. I think the GT2 RS is going to be the last car with the GT1. The 9A1 does seem like it will technically be a better engine but at this point it has not been proven so no one really knows...

It will be a shame when the Mezger finally disappears from Fast Porsche's... it's been a trully amazing engine, both in the GT & Turbo road cars and most of the race cars too.

Hopefully the 9A1 will inherit the bullet proof relaiability of the Mezger and not the suspect IMS issues of the other water cooled units.

It's interesting to see what Porsche can do with a flat four. Having a smaller engine doesn't necessarily mean slower car.

911 TDI is the future. :D

*smacks kikie*

Diesel Cayenne makes sense. Diesel Panamera makes sense. Diesel 911, NO.

while it could work, it'll ruin the 911 forever.

I personally think the new F4 could work in a new 944 remake.

Just had another thought...

could, and would, Porsche try to get into the General Avation market with such a motor?

No. They would need to simplify the design to a point that it's not worth it. Then there would be the testing and such to make sure that it fills all aerospace requirements and additional development costs. It's not like wankel engines, which have been used in light and ultralight aircrafts for ages due to small size and simplicity.

Well, Mooney ran a Porsche Turbo engine in the M20 during the '70s or '80s, but, eh, I get your point.

It will have forced induction, high revving or both.

That, and reduced weight at the rear might actually make it a quicker car around the corners than the predecessor.

Like those first gen V8 F1 cars in this decade went faster in the turns than the V10s of earlier.

I think I could see it become the base engine in the Cayman/Boxter. I think there was also talk about a smaller Porsche sometime? It would be good in the Cajun if that thing was to ever happen. Although I have a suspicion that Porsche would put the 2.0 TFSI in there.

I would love to see a new, FR 944 be made though. I'm sure Porsche could make a great ~30K sports car with a flat four in the nose.

Porsche are doing well with the engine, 360bhp turbo , when Subaru are doing 260bhp for their sports car with the low centre of gravity boxer 2.0 turbo.

Um...did anyone see the commercial for the new Beetle during the Super Bowl just a few minutes ago?

did...anyone notice the profile of said new Beetle? How it was sporty and...rear-engined?

You think this engine is for...that?

seems you don't see is so much in this one...

I really doubt VW would make the Beetle RWD. Does not fit the target demographic.
