I am not trying to create any rumors here, I just have a slight feeling that Xbox might release a Portable version of the Xbox 360 in the next 2 years or so, since at the moment, it seems like portable consoles are very popular. What do you think?

No. I have a not so slight feeling that there won't be a portable Xbox 360 since Nintendo is pretty much king when it comes to portables.

Yeah, I have a Nitendo DS, and it is very good. For some reason though, I dont enjoy playing on it, even though I like it!

Edit: Still there is a slight possiblitiy, it's not like it's impossible!

Not a hope in hell, take a look at what was required to make a 360 'portiable'...

...it can be done but at over 6kg is hardly portable at all. Remember these things have a slight issue with heat.

Cooling stuff

It could probably be possible, but hardware would have to significantly improve over the next couple of years for it to be possible, as Scaff is showing above. Afterall, the PSP is nearly identical to the PS2.

Maybe in 5 years time - who knows.

 Is that a 360?
Sort of. It's the guts of a 360 installed into a laptop case. There's a few websites out there with pictures of the thing. It was a one-off custom mod for someone with more money than sense. The guy that did it took the job largely out of curiosity to see if it could be done.

It's also possible for Nintendo to drop out of the console race tomorrow. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, or there's any increased chance of happening.

Microsoft has made and is making DS games already in the form of Diddy Kong Racing and Viva Pinata DS. Considering that, and all the crap the PSP has went through (even with the PlayStation brand behind it), and they already have their hands full with the 360, and there has been absolutely no indication of any portable console from MS in recent memory... a mass market portable Xbox isn't going to happen within the next 5 years.

I dont mean take a normal Xbox 360 and make it portable. I mean like what sony did with the PSP! Does anyone think there is any chance that Microsoft would make a Handheld Xbox!

Simply using it as an example of what would be required, keep in mind that with the PS2, even in original form, a lot of 'spare' spare existed within the box. The slim-line PS2 clearly showed that, change the drive and you have a small set of components.

MS seem to have dropped all support for the original Xbox and to enter the handheld market with something that does no more than the DS or PSP would be a foolish move. Keep in mind just how much money the gaming side of Microsoft is loosing (they have never turned a profit), the last thing they need is something else to bleed money.

In the 360 side of things, well that as likely as a handheld PS3 within the next two years, a decade from now maybe, but not in the short term (and that's what the portable 360 I posted illustrates - how far we are currently from this).

Not to mentioned how unreliable the console would be. I mean the PS2 slim had a lot of problem with overheating. With the current state of the 360, i don't think a portable version would ever come out. Microsoft doesn't need all the extra handheld consoles on the market like Sony or Nintendo because MS already had another gaming market. (the PC) Well i think MS would be better of with the 360 than anything else....

Yes, they get hot, but I don't recall people getting many issues with it overheating.

Hell, I remember Famine mentioning in the GT4 forum he left his one for for quite a few days running enduros and had no issues. Neither have I.

I thought the power supply would fail on PSTwos?
Yeah, but I think they fixed that issue over a year ago (a recall).

Although, I admit I don't know if they're still failing now... just everyone I know who has one has never had an issue. All were bought within the last year.

I've got the PS2 GT3-edition, and while it has worked fine most of the time, the age is showing. Its loud, sometimes doesn't like to work, and doesn't always like talking to my HDTV.

Back on topic:

There was talk, and by talk I mean rumors, about a portable XBOX (not X360) a few years back, but nothing came of it. My guess is that it would be far more likely to see Microsoft team-up with a phone company (Motorola? Simmens? Samsung?) to make a cell phone (ala iPhone) that could run some of the Games for Windows titles at a decent rate, running a Microsoft OS of course...

We'll see, but I'm doubting it.
