i am planning on buying my first car next year, i want a car that would get me from point a to b without using too much gas, easy to work on, and has a sporty feel for $5000. i would love a 90's Japanese sports car but they are kinda rare in chicago:indiff:. does anyone have any ideas?

^Uhhhhh.... and to the OP, get a Corolla. They're good for just about everything a teenager needs and you wont wreck it like an idiot.

In before Miata. No, but really, a Miata is a great choice for a first sporty car. As is the Nissan 240SX, a popular drift car for most, but also loved for its practicality, reliability, and generally being inexpensive fun. On the other spectrum, there are many great front wheel drive sporty Japanese cars. The Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, and Honda Civic Si are all great choices here, but beware that Integras have a bad habit of being stolen.

a 240sx would be great i have always liked the stlye of it, sorta like an inexpensive nsx. also after i buy other cars and such i would like to turn my first into a possible race car like for the scca, so thats the main reason i want a sports car.

If you love rice I mean Honda's, go for a Civic. From what I can tell, they're pretty cheap. That or a CRZ.

If you can score a rather slow-ish Imprezza or Evo, go for those as they will provide the best bang for your Japanese buck - especially a turbo'ed one.

But the god-almighty of cheap Japanese sports cars is easily the Miata. Light as a feather with just enough power to make you smile. Already found numerous ones for under $5000 on craigslist near me.

I also hear some older British cars are pretty decent (assuming you can find/import the car). Sunbeams, Triumphs, MGs, TVRs...assuming you can find a decent one for under $5000.

And if you're looking for something more square-ish with cargo space, an S10 will do wonders. Used to drive a '98 2.2L and loved it. Basically a sportstruck IMO - even beat a stock '86 2.3L Mustang in a drag . Kinda miss it now though :/....especially the AC.

I'm going to buy a Miata, the very few times I've drove one, it felt so light and powerful, I felt like a god out there, too bad it was borrowed from a friend

I can easily tell you to buy a miata, but is up to you

Also with civics, here in mexico, integras and civics have the fame of being the fastest cars out there, that's the main reason they steal those cars here, I hate those cars, because people here install very noisy exhausts, they make so much noise that makes me wonder about their poor ears :(

Miatas are the best choice.

Well what I'm getting for mine which you might like is an '82-86 Toyota Supra. For under $5000, you can probably get a half decent one. They are a bit difficult to find though. Also insurance would be better on something like a 240SX or Civic, for me it would be about $1000-$1200 a year.

A V8 AMC Gremlin, Plymouth Valiant Signet, Cougar XR-7, Buick Regal (Either 3.8 V6 Turbo or 305 CID V8 would be fast) They're all small block V8's, easy on gas.

I was very close to buying a '78 Regal w/ 305 4-Barrel a few days ago, $700. But waited too long. :indiff:

Another car I'd suggest is the Nissan 300ZX (The first one, not the larger, second one). It looks nice, is pretty speedy, and it's a classic. I found one in mint condition on the local Craigslist for 7,000, so a 300ZX with reasonable miles and still in decent condition shouldn't be hard to find. Unfortunately, most people don't know what the hell they're doing with these cars, so most of them are crap. But there are some good ones out there, and they're great cars. Of course, there's also the older Z cars which are also great sports cars. The 280Z will be the next easiest to find car; but a bit rare. I found 2 on Ebay for 1,500 or under, and those were both rather rough, but I'm sure a good one can be had for 5,000. If you find a good example of one of these, go for it.

If I had to do it again with little money I'd go for this.

Cheap to maintain, small engine but still sporty and it looks good. Parts are also cheap..

thank you guys for your comments and i am so far deciding upon a miata, 240sx, or a 300zx. if anyone else wants to ask about their possible first car feel free to otherwise just give me more options
