On the way home from school today I got to thinking about how Subaru and Toyota would split up the performance of the new coupe, to justify it's cost and possibly squeeze into as many markets as possible. Main reason for these thoughts being that I'd most likely be in the new car market sometime during these cars current model lifetime, and I currently have a 1990 Toyota Celica ST, so the thoughts of the new generation being my next car seemed appropriate.

Toyota-
-Base Model with 160-180hp, N/A RWD
-Upgraded Model with 240-260hp, Turbo RWD OR AWD (GT4/Alltrac turbo ressurection anyone?) not both unless Subaru doesn't wanna sell in the U.S.***
-Possible higher performance version (USDM anyways) if Subaru allows, this would most likely be RWD with STI power levels.

Subaru-
-Base Model with 160-170hp, N/A AWD (Most likely outside of American Market)
-Upgraded Model with 260hp, Turbo AWD (If I had to pick just one to be sold in U.S. it would be this one, however this might limit the appearance of Toyota's version to RWD... and I want a Toyota Alltrac Turbo!)***
-STI Model with 290-310hp, Turbo AWD (Could potentially see U.S. shores, but would seriously interfere with the Impreza STI's sales, may be JDM only unless there's a demand)

Toyota has a history with both RWD and AWD (in this kind of car anyways), and any decisions they make would effect whether or not we see any Subaru coupes at all. Though I'm sure Subaru would push for at least one model in the American market, maybe two, but there would have to be distinct mechanical differences.

Which would you pick? Any other potential models you could see?

EDIT: I of course left out the fact that the Subaru's might be RWD, which would spice up the mix, but we don't know either way at the moment as the concept car hasn't even been released and wont be for awhile.

My pick would be a Toyota Turbo model if they make one (they're on the fence about it right now but I think it's an obvious choice). RWD or AWD doesn't matter too much but if I had to pick I'd say AWD and call it a GT-Four.

I'll most likely end up with a base model Toyota though, offers a nice package for the money.

I'm thinking the Toyota will stick to RWD. Actually I believe Subaru is wrestling with Toyota over whether or not the program will be able to support AWD. I could see Toyota offering the 2GR-FE or something along with the 2ZZ-GE.

As for Subaru, I'd favor them pulling out if they can't build it with a good AWD system. I think it would be cool to have some version of a WRX motor and then the STI mill as well. And they could probably play with prices and trim to make sure that it doesn't compete too much with the STI, not that they have to worry about that I'd say. And this way they could probably grab quite a few guys who have grown out of their WRXs and want to keep something sporty but a little more grown up.

I don't think we will ever see a AWD version of this car, since it is not a new generation Celica. It's the new AE-86, known for being a great RWD drifter's car, and in my opinion it would defeat the purpose by making a AWD version of it. GT-Four is a higher performance / AWD version of the Celica, and this car has nothing to do with the Celica. But I do agree that we will probably see 2 or 3 versions from both sides, Subaru probably making an AWD version of it.

Well the name being considered for the car right now is Celica, and while the vehicle is very strongly pushing RWD right now, I think the possibility is there for Toyota to use AWD. Likelihood of that happening? Slim, but the option isn't off the table. It all depends on the focus of the Higher Performance car, do they want to continue to up-play the Drift-ability or do they want to make the car a track monster?

I'm betting the Scooby gets AWD across the board, while the Toy gets RWD only.

I'm also seriously doubting we're gonna get an inline four of any sort in this thing.

The concept is called the FT-86, and if you've been looking on the home page of this website you would have seen this car drifting with a Sprinter Trueno a few page scrolls down. It's not going to be called the Celica, that's quite obvious.

Are you certain? or might they do what they've always done, and given the same car different names in different markets?

They should just call it the Fujiwara Special seeing as it's obviously the brainchild of someone dreaming about a Takumi/Bunta mashup car.

"President Toyoda referred several times at the Tokyo show to his company’s rear-drive sports cars, citing the MR2, the Celica and the AE86 Corolla coupe. “The fact that none of these vehicles is still being produced makes me, a serious car fan, really sad,” he said. The show-car’s FT86 name is a reference to the AE86, by the way, but Tada says the production car might be called Celica."
