NOS Waster
Alright. I have a slight problem on my hands. The G27 pedals I have are starting to get wonky in that despite having cleaned the pots, they are still going a bit crazy. Because of Alaska's permanent fund dividend, I get 900 dollars this october to spend on some sim racing hardware and a GT6 preorder.

My options are as follows:
1) Purchase Obutto Ozone, Triple Stand, GT6 preorder and wait until december to amass the remaining money for a T500RS (Already have the TH8, which is a fantastic shifter).

2) Purchase T500 RS and GT6 preorder first, then wait until December for the Ozone and Triple Mount.

3) Option one, but instead of a T500 RS just immediately get a G27 replacement.

If I pick option 1, I always have a DFGT to hold me over on Gran Turismo 5 and 6.

I'm leaning toward 1, but I'd like to get some opinions on this anyway.

It's a hard pick. Let's break it down a bit.

1. Triples won't work with one copy of GT6.
2. GT6 won't be out until december and with a bit of luck you should be able to fork up the money for a pre-order before release anyway.
3. Going back to the DFGT will be a let down and frustrating I'd reckon.
4. A rig isn't really needed for racing, though it helps.
5. When I buy a replacement for something that is broken, I always go for something that is better than the broken item I have. I don't wish to stand still but I rather want to improve upon the old. So getting the same item again is a big 'no no' in my book.

In the end I think I would go with option 2. Get a nice new wheel that works and keeps you busy until december and you get your preorder in. Then until you get some money again you can at least enjoy yourself in a proper way (and a T500 is a real step up in my opinion). I think the rig and triple stand can wait until December. Those things don't run away, but they are just that... stands/furniture. You can sit in them and put something on them, but at the end it is mostly that what you put on it that delivers the most important enjoyment factor.

My vote: option 2 :)

I agree, get the wheel now. A sturdy and functional rig can be improvised and still be very effective, while a lesser wheel is just a lesser wheel. Also, you wouldn't want something unforeseen to happen with your finances and be left using the lesser wheel even longer.

The T500 is a waste of money with GT!

Anything like driving a fast car within the speed limits? But nobody would ever do that, would they?

At least we can feel confident that you won't exceed the speed limit on that high horse you ride.

Very helpful.

Currently, All I'm using is a fairly old desk but yeah, upgrading the wheel for now would probably be for the best. I am considering getting back into PC sim racing, which is the entire reason I have three monitors. I'm definitely aware that I'd have to buy two more PS3's and GT6 copies to use triple screens there. Ick! If I can't fork over the cash for the triple monitor mount in december, then I'll settle for just the cockpit, though for some reason I don't mind that. :sly:

I'll try and manage with something in the interim.

Though on the bright side I may be so caught up in Pokemon that I might forget to give the T500 a quick go in GT5.

That's true, I really don't want to be stuck with that old DFGT. If I can't stand using this desk I can always wait until december to grab an Obutto.

I would go for option 2 also.

That seems to be the consensus, and is probably the best option now that I think of it. I hear fantastic things about the T500 RS as well so it makes me that much more eager to give it a go!

I've would definitely pick Option 2.

You get a great Wheel here, its a huge step up from your G27 and will reward you with great feel and quality just like the Th8rs shifter you already got. I'd say get the Full RS set now, enjoy it and get the rig afterwards.
This way you had a good time with your Wheel upgrade, you had time to get in pace with it + you can look forward to complete your setup with a nice rig, witch will reward you yet Again!

I would not recommend the Obutto Ozone simply becuse there´s no predrilled holes and the adjustablility of the wheelplate is terrible. I have the Obutto and it annoys me that either you have the wheel at acceptable height but too far away, or close enough but too high. R-seat costs around the same and it have much better adjustability and predrilled holes for T500. One more thing, don´t preorder GT6 there´s probably not gonna be much different from GT6, better wait to see the reviews.

1: You must be joking. The RSEAT itself is $549. Then the triple monitor mount is another $549. That's absolutely ludicrous. I have a drill and can put the holes in the Obutto myself. That's an insanely easy fix.

2: I will preorder GT6. Nothing is changing my mind about that.

Hehe, there will be precisely zero difference actually.

NOSWaster, building your own cockpit is really not that hard once you get some momentum. One that I have is solid, functional, and not completely ugly, and cost me next to nothing (maybe $20). There's great savings to be made.

Then you should be able to build your own
Having a drill and knowing how to use it does not instantly make me able to build my own.

Did you build it out of wood, steel, or aluminum? I'm not going to have a wooden cockpit.

I've used all sorts of different things for different things. My main rig is mainly a combination of mdf, aluminium and steel tubing, with an office chair that was pulled apart and put back together completely differently (car seats are easy to pick up cheap though). I just look at junk and figure out it's new purpose. I used the tough plastic surrounding the wheels on a suit case to make holsters for my Namco light guns for example. A steel u shaped "shoe" intended for verandah posts to make a really solid clamp for the awkward Fanatec shifter. I'm now collecting parts that will go towards making a virtual pinball table. It's quite fun once you get going.

Don't be down timber though, it's probably the easiest material to make a sturdy rig out of, and doesn't have to be ugly. Especially when painted. My first stand was an old coffee table screwed to a piece of mdf that extended like a foot, and would sandwich between the floor and a sofa. Sturdy, free, and fast.

Well there's another thing. I can't look at something I see as junk and repurpose it. My mind doesn't really work that way... or rather my imagination. I mean sure, I've thought of the prospect of actually drilling a large desk into the studs of a recessed space in my room, but I don't think any future house buyers would like that at all.

I say buy an oZone and a wheel and hold off on the triples unless you are going to transition to PC sims. Triples for console use are neat, but they have such limited support I can't see it being worth the triples rig, plus 3 games, plus 3 systems, ect... but a oZone with a nice sized screen and a good wheel (T500RS is a great choice, but probably won't work with a $900 budget, G27 probably would and is great for GT) will make your console and GT experience better. Especially if you already have a DFGT, I say get a rig.

I already have iRacing so it's less of a transition and more of a return. I never really planned on triples for console, and my trio of monitors are 24 inches at 1920x1080@60.

My Momo Black was replaced by my DFGT before my DFGT was replaced by my G27, and I'm looking to actually get an upgrade over the G27 because while the wheel is good, it feels really notchy and the deadzone sometimes gets annoying. That is where the predicament lies.

Well knowing that changes things a bit, but I'd still say get a rig and watch the wheel market, with the new systems coming up and new wheels coming out there might be some reason to wait. T500 is a great unit tho, if you find a deal on one I'd snag it.

Well, I did find this on Amazon.

I mean, I will probably hold off on the T500RS until I get 100% confirmation if the official load cell mod is gonna be released or not.

I think the "official" one is DOA, but the Bodin load cell is out there and works great.

I used my T500 on my fanatec stand for a while, and it worked fine, but I don't think I'd try the shifter in that position. I say put that $165 towards a fixed rig.

The reason I want the shifter up close to the wheel is because it's the optimal place for racing (as seen in many racing cars).

But yes, building a fixed rig with some very solid wood might be good if anyone can help me out with plans. I want the wheel and shifter in their optimal places for racing. (Center of wheel up at breastbone and gear shifter knob at the 3oclock position when pulled between 1st and second gates.)

Hard mounting is a good idea so I can put in a removable keyboard tray for when I am not racing.
And so the wheel doesn't wiggle and move about too much.

It will be a fixed rig since I have a laptop for playing games other than racing sims. :)

Whatever works for you! It's going to be pretty top heavy (the pedals being on the base help, but that wheel is a BEAST, and the shifter is substantial) so be careful when you shift towards yourself, you might end up with a lap full of wheel.

All I know is, I loved my stand with the G27, and it was fine for the T500, but when you get the T500 on a fixed rig you start being able to really feel what it's all about.

Don't worry, I'll have my triple screens held down with a few wooden plates screwed into the rig after I can get the angle and size of them adjusted perfectly!

Yeah I should of added mod as needed.

Actually do you know how tall Shaun is? I'm 5'10" which means I might need to only make the wheel deck slightly taller. I'll need to make a modded shifter Deck, and I plan on modifying or adding a triple monitor stand.

Update: I love being able to use trigonometry to find out the dimensions of my monitor stand. I can calculate it just from the width, depth, angle of deflection between my monitors. *insert cheers here.*
