So I have this old folder with a winrar file, but the folder will not be deleted.

It says its currently running through another program, but after several reboots of the PC and uninstall any programs it might run through it still won't go away...

Anyone know a fix to this? Or a way to find out which program that causes the problem?

Do you get any error messages?

You may need to run a chkdsk to fix any HDD file system issues first.

Try Unlocker. It has been very helpful and effective for me.
Tried installing it, but it won't start. :grumpy:

I've tried re-installing, removing any anti-virus programs, and any other means I can think of.

I get an error message like "Cannot complete the action because the folder or file is open in another program". In norwegian of course.

Wait what? :dunce:

Eks
chkdsk = Check Disk. It just fixes any errors on the HDD.
Hmm, don't know how to do that. ;)

Probably cmd, but I don't want to mess with that, when I don't know what to do with it.

It says though that the folder might be used by "SYSTEM", whatever that means.

If you right click on a folder or file, do you still see Winrar options, like Extract, etc? If yes, that is why you can't delete the files that are already in use.

You might try a couple things.

1.) Open msconfig from the Start-> Run command. Check out System Startup and see if winrar is listed there. Take the check out if it is and restart.

2.) Might try booting to safe mode and then try to delete the folder.

Just curious, did you install winrar from winrar.com or rarlabs.com?

Right click C:\
Properties
Tools
Check Disk

Check both options and click OK and reboot.

Scan will take some time but should fix any issues and it will warn you of any major issues.

Use Malwarebyte's file assassin to kill your winrar files then delete the folder. I do that when there's files I can't delete and it works 99% of times.

You could boot a linux live CD and delete it that way. Personally, that's the first thing I would try.

Are you currently using Windows 7? When I was running 7 I would run into that issue quite often.

Hmm, i'll check that, but i've deleted winrar like 2 weeks ago.

I'll try that.

Can't remember. :P

Ehm, cannot find that option (tools -> check disk). Bloody norwegian windows.

Well that sounds promising. I'll check that out too if none of the others work. Thanks.

Don't have any linux live CD, and I really don't like the looks and interface of linux. But thanks for the suggestion.

Windows 7 yeah.

Funny thing is, this is the only file/folder i've ever had trouble deleting.

Wait, you deleted it (deleted the icon/shortcut) or uninstalled it entirely?

Also, make sure there are no processes running in the background that may involve WinRar or the file/folder.

I deleted/un-installed winrar yes.

But I actually figured it out now, it wasn't winar, but deamon tools which caused the problem. But I haven't had deamon tools installed in ages. :sly:

Thanks everyone!
