Sounds like a dead Blu-Ray drive, a coincidence that you happened to try to install GT5 when it did. A real PITA though.

How old is it? If it's only just out of warranty I'd get Sony to repair it under Sale of Goods Act, if it's a release day PS3, they probably won't be interested.

It looks like your PS3 was ready to go and GT5 just pushed it the final step with it's extra strain it will put on your ps3 :( I have had 2 fat 60gig PS3's die on me within 1 year and fully expect my final fat 60gig PS3 to do pretty much the same as what yours done when I insert GT5 also :dunce: I always like to think the worst as these consoles are absolute garbage and sony enjoy the £130 get out clause when you phone them out of warranty 👎 it was all preplanned by them ;)

Sorry mate if it's a fat 60 gigger its for the bin and don't believe any youtube vids or ebay sellers with fixes as they are only short term! a week at tops. I bought a 160gig slim last week thats still sat in the box just incase the worst happens to me also but hopefully can just pass it on to the missus :sly:

Good luck getting your situation sorted bud

I think as long as it's not a yellow light then you are ok.

I remember when i first got my PS3 last year i had this happen, and when i turned it back on i got an error code.It asked do you want to send this error code to PSN or somehing of that nature.I can't remember exactly. It's worked fine ever since.

I don't think you have anything to worry about

Just because it's out of warranty doesn't mean you have to bend over and let Sony charge you that extortionate rate. The law does protect us UK folk against electrical items within a reasonable time frame after purchase.

Though the SoGA implies you should be contacting the retailer you bought it from. Do some research on it and save yourself a few bob next time.

Up to you if you want to risk losing your hard-drive data. Might be worth ringing Sony to confirm that light issue.

Check when your warranty ran out. If it's just out of date, contact who you bought it from and say "My warranty has just ran out, but I have this problem, but the SoGA (http://whatconsumer.co.uk/how-long-should-it-last/) states that clearly it is reasonable to expect the product to work for longer than over a year."

Feeling the pain here too ! My 60gig fatty went south last week. No hesistation, the 160 slim is settling in nicely now.

I had the same shut down and flashing red light and then on subsequent start ups the yellow light came on.

I managed to start it to the xmb screen and transfer my saves to external memory, but everytime I tried to load a game it shut down.

Sorry it is just bad news.

I'm probably going to jinx myself but I am not planning on my PS3 shutting down on me. It is 2.5 years old as well but there have been almost no issues with it (other than network lags once or twice). I take very good care of it (as its off entirely, not just red-lighted, at least once a week). I will be very upset if/when I lose it because I still have an extensive PS1 and PS2 collection but if I see any issues I will prepare accordingly.

I'm on my 3rd 60gig fat PS3 and i haven't use for a least a year...tommorow i'm getting my copy of GT5, i hope everything will be fine otherwise i will be very mad..

Moved to the correct forum as, quite clearly, GT5 did not break your PS3. The PS3 just chose that particulart moment to do whatever it did.

When you try to turn it on, does the light go yellow?
I've had what you described many times PS3 freezing and the red light blinks to standby. Try turning it on and then report back, c'mon, Ive had my PS3 revv on me

Sorry to say this has something to do with the GT5 game.
I popped the game in, downloaded patch, installed game. played for some hours. When i decided to play again and start the game it instantly said 80010514 and i was like wtf?
i tried some more times and it kept doing it. I tried about 10 games, no problems at all, and 4 movies, no problem at all.

I tried GT5 again, same problem... then i just retried, and eventually it started... but next time i wanted to play again it did it all over.
So this is indeed some errors on some of the GT5 discs, and not the ps3 itself.

There would be a lot more posting if people had that problem with GT5. A few people said it was hanging on the GT screen for 5 minutes and would freeze but that was due to the servers being overloaded, had nothing to do with the game.

Seeing as there was a lot of people that have already installed, and patched and haven't reported an error message, this would be the first place you'd find it, and people have been patched since about 18 hours ago.

GT 5 broke my ps3 also? At the intro the screen froze, waited a bit nothing happen, so i restarted the ps3. The game disc wasnt there? Ejected and re-inserted the game didnt auto launch. Tried my other ps3 games gow3,sports champions etc. also my spider man 3 movie. none of them work

help plz

Sounds like your blu-ray drive in broken. Try loading up a movie, if it does not load then it means your drive is broken.

Its 110% your blu ray drive dead

i phoned Sony UK,and they asked me how long i have owned it,said about a year(its 22/9/09) .
Then they asked me for the receipt and said to fax it with a ref number they gave me,and said they d call me.
Hope i get a new one for free!

My fat seems to have given up as well, got about 2 hours gaming in, then beep beep beep and flashing red light, that was late last night, today I can't boot up and worse than that can't get gt5 out of the damn drive. This is my second fat, first was replaced by Sony under warranty, looks like I'll be paying for the next one. oh well I guess I'm going to have to get the screwdriver out to see if I can get to the disc, I'll just chuck this in the console graveyard (2 xboxes, 1 360, ps2 and 2 ps1s, oh yeah and my psp's not exactly in Full working order). If I had a Wii I'm sure it'd be broken too. Maybe I should just give up and do a puzzle or something...

Sony replaced my PS3 Slim on Tuesday. I believe the unit is a repaired one from another user, but so far, with about 10 hours of GT5 thrown in, and it is running absolutely silent.
Unlike the "old" one that was loud as ****

Yeah analogue gaming might be the way to go! Connect 4 anyone?, its multiplayer!

Seriously with the way consoles are going, being more and more complex and unreliable it makes me consider jumping back to PC gaming which at least is easier to fix and cheaper in the long term. The only problem is dev's now totally focus on console development and if your even lucky enough to get a PC version its usually buggy as hell.

You don't mind getting a used console? I personally could never accept anything other than my own one back or a new one. I was suprised to see that some slims are starting to fail so maybe it didnt totally solve all the fat's issues.

Robin.

i dont mind at all. I couldnt play GT5,ps3 broke down on release day, so i got my mate to bring his ps3 round, but cant be playing on that for ever. Now i have to catch up with him!

I too just got the blinking red light. Right in the middle of the Snow Rally, which I was winning :D. This is the second time I've had the blinking red light, but last time I was (obviously) able to fix it, this time though seems like a long shot.
