Problem with installing/running GTR

I just installed GTR on my old computer and when I tried to run it I got an error message to the tune of this: "Insufficient disk swap space or virtual memory. Minimum disk swap space needed 150MB." Now, I'm not all that familiar with the technical side of computers, thus I have never heard of disk swap space. But after referring to Windows' Support Center I checked the virtual memory paging file and it said that there was 180MB free. I manually changed this value to 280MB just to see if it would help anything but still no luck. What do you all suggest the problem may be and what I need to do to get the game running? I am using Windows XP if that means anything.

Update: After restarting the computer and trying again, I got a new error message: "No support for texture compression found. DXT texture compression required." Again, I don't know what this means, and there is nothing I can click on to get a further explanation. Unfortunately, there is no topic on that matter in Windows Help and Support.

do you have dirext x 9 installed? is the game updated? what videocard do you have? are the videocard drivers updated?

I'll be honest, I'm not into computer gaming. I got an awesome deal on the Logitech DFP a few years back and bought a couple of racing games with it. After having played the other game on and off for the past couple of years, I now want to play GTR. To answer your question..............well I can't actually answer your question. I have no idea what kind of video card that computer has. How do I find out?

click start, click run. type dxdiag and press enter

you should be running DirectX 9.0c click the display tab at the top. and it will tell you what videocard you have, or at least the series.

How old is your computer?

I've got GTR as well and believe me, if you don't have all of the recommended requirements, don't start playing it because you'll have lots of lagging while playing...

After checking, the video card has 8MB of memory. Obviously, I need a major upgrade, lol. Thanks for helping me. What type of video card do you guys recommend? I'm not looking for the most high-end card I can get, just something that will run the game smoothly and come for a reasonable price.

Try going to a local computer store and see if they have an old one that someone has upgraded. Other than that the game calls for a video card with at least 64MB. Recommended 256 MB. This info is on the back of game box.

Okay, I don't know what the exact specs of my older computer is but with that seriously weak video card, there's a good chance that the machine is not strong enough to handle a modern game anyway. However, the current computer I am using appears to be capable: 3200+ AMD Athlon processor with 2.2GHz processor speed and 512MB RAM (not like I know what any of that stuff means, but those specs match up with what's on the box). However, the current graphics card (VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP) only has 64MB of memory and will need to be upgrade.

So before I dive in and buy a new video card, I need you guys' help. Particularly:

1) How do I know if the video card is compatible with my machine?
2) What does the typical installation process consist of?
3) What does all the lingo mean in the card name (e.g., ATI 100-437105 Radeon 9550 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP Video Card)?
4) Which company has the best reputation/most trustworthy?

Thanks

The 9000 and all that are just series, like the GeForce 7 series (7600. etc.)

I'd recommend going with ATI or GeForce, those 2 are without any doubt the best on the market. For RAM, I'd recommend a card with up to 256 Mb RAM. 128 is just enough for GTR while it's not enough for the latest games, and a 512 Mb RAM card is far too pricey for now since it's relativly new so I'd go with the 256 one. That'll keep you sweet for a long time 👍

I'm pretty sure it'll be compatible with your machine, they all look the same, all you need to do is screw your PC open, put that card in, connecting it with some stuff and voila! But don't worry, it all comes with a manual how to install (I got a manual with my GeForce 5 series, need to upgrade as well..).

Thanks everyone for the help. After a fair bit of browsing and research I have decided to purchase the XFX GeForce 6200 256MB DDR2 AGP Video Card seen here: http://www.amazon.com/XFX-GeForce-6200-DDR2-Video/dp/B000CQ73PW/ref=sr_1_5/103-7695100-9572635?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183229991&sr=1-5. I have ordered it through Amazon and it should arrive sometime next week. I'll come back and post here if I have any problems or questions after the product arrives. Again, thanks to everyone that has helped.
