Lately ive been having a problem with my ps3 and its annoying. it will turn itself off on its own but only while im playing socom confrontation or gt5p. those are the only two games it does it on and i know some people will say its over heating but i can put gt4 in and have it on all day and that wont happen. i would like to know if anyone knows a solution to this problem because i dont want to get gt and not be able to play it due to it shutting off. thanks in advance

well i did the system update last night hoping that would help it and was playing prologue and it still did it so i dont know whats wrong with it. i tried all my ps3 and ps2 games and it works perfectly on all of them except the two i mentioned

As a last ditch effort, delete the GT5P and Socom game data, and re-install them to see if that works. I did this for my GTA IV when the sound wouldn't work and then resets the system. If it doesn't work then, shoot, I don't know what you can do. Sorry if I couldn't help.

yea tried that deleted the file and the actual disc installs of the HDD and reinstalled them and well it lasted 12 minutes this time when before id get 5 minutes if that. sometimes i'd get to the main page on them and then it would cut off and it was frustrating as he**. well thanks for the help

So re instaling helped a little? could just possibley be a HDD problem. both games are prety much completly loaded onto the HDD, as a very last ditched effort, back up your HDD then wipe the whole thing, then just instal GT5P and try it again. If it still dosn't play you can re-instal the HDD from your backup. It's prety a drastic solution but baring both SOCOM and GT5p discs being faulty you either have a HDD problem, a blueray drive problem or an overheating problem. The HDD problem seems most likely followed by the disks being damaged. Please let us all know how your getting on, I would say unless you can hear your PS3's fans blowing like crazy before it turns of you can rule out an over heating problem.

While I am no expert, I don't know if you can rule out over heating as the cause. You see everytime I have seen hard drive problems, they tend to lock up the system and not reset/crash it as such. A blu-ray drive problem is quite possible as I have seen people mention they have had it, have you got any other blu-rays to try? However usually people with this problem can't get it to start the games at all. Which leaves over heating or something entirely different. I know when my Sky box overheats it turns itself off, as did a PC I had when the fan stopped working, so it is quite possible that it is shutting itself down to protect itself. Maybe the fan is clogged up with dust or something causing it to not function properly. Then again it could be something else entirely.

That definately sounds like your blueray drive is on it's wasy out. I had that same exact problem whereas my system would only read 2 games & not the rest, then finally the it stopped reading all. (BLUERAY NEEDED REPLACING).

The light seems to get weaker as time goes on, then ceases to read blue ray. In my case it still read DVD'S & CD's. In other peoples cases it ceases to read all disc formats.

But the game would lock-up or freeze wouldn't it if it couldn't read it, not crash/reset the system as is what is happing to the OP. The games boot-up on his PS3 only for the system to crash at some point in the future, this surely can't be because of the blu-ray drive.

Based on what was said as the original problem Im thinking that it might be something to do with the touch sensitive buttons maybe activating themselves due to a faulty connection or something, try cleaning them.

It does turn off by itself when it overheats. The solution is to put the PS3 in the open shelf. Make sure it doesn't place too close to the wall.

New firmware is reported break at least Uncharted.

While that may very well be true or false, I wouldn't know as I don't have Uncharted. The OP stated he had this problem before the new firmware, therefor the firmware has nothing to do with this problem.

I was referring to an earlier post that had disc reading problems, sorry.

But in the case of freezing a friend of mine had that issue & the problem was overheating. He had to get thermal paste reapplied to the contacts that come into contact with the CPU & GPU on the board.

well the thing is its just setting out on a dresser and its only those two games i have other blu-rays games and movies and mutiple ps2 games that are played on it and i was sort of thinking that its because the games are big that it does that. and i regards to cleaning the buttons i give my system as much a thorough cleaning that i can. i clean all vents and i had opened the system up as far as the top off and cleaned all the dust from inside there( my console is 7 months out of warranty) so its like that and still only those two. i actually left it on all day with Tomb Raider Underworld in it once playing it then took that out to go to sleep. left it off cooling all night and turned it on put GT5P in and 3 minutes later it did it after i started the game

The 4 main causes for PS3 issues are (in no particular order) Power supply, Blueray player, HDD and overheating. From your discription it's a Blueray player or HDD issue. Theres nothing you can do yourself regarding the Blueray but there is some things you can do with the HDD. Also as far as Power suply and overheating goes theres little but cleaning dust out of vents, listening to the fan speed and using a seperate plug socket for it. From your discription all I could sugest is check the 2 problem disks in another PS3, also check them for scratches and also backup then wipe your HDD and re-install from scratch. You can also check your fan speeds are not excessive, plug the PS3 into a seperate power supply and then clean out the vents......once you've done all that there is nothing further you can do without a heatgun and balls of steel LOL

My PS3 sits on top on my entertainment center vertical. I don't smoke in my house and there is an AC vent right above it that blows cool air over it. I own a 1st gen. 60GB and I have had no issues with mine...knock on wood. I also vacuum my vents out about once a week. I'm very OCD over all my electronics though, call me a weirdo.

yea it has plenty of room to breathe and today i noticed it does that with the life with playstation feature to where it will turn itself off

Life with playstation is HDD only so it's looking like a HDD error, I say this as an overheating problem "should" give an audiable warrning with high fan speeds. Both GT5p and SOCOM are also HDD intensife. might be worth changeing the HDD if you have one spare and completly wiping it dosn't help.

yea im going to buy one soon seeing as how im running out of space (80GB motorstorm bundle) im in th 20GB range

yea it shuts off then 2 seconds later it beeps 3 times and stays with the red flashing light then i have to get up touch the power touch-sensative button and it goes solid then i have to touch it again for it to turn green

Thats not the HDD, your PS3 overheats.
Maybe too much dust inside and the cooling paste might be gone (really the worst problem with the PS3).

You could eventually fix it for yourself, but if you still have warranty i would say return it (but dont forget to deactivate your account first on the system under account management, this way you keep that 1 of the 5 "lifes" you have).

EDIT: I would also recommend to copy all your savegames on a extern HDD or a flashdrive.
