Problem with second controller on 2 player splitscreen

I have made several attempts to play against a friend using two Sixaxis controllers, however no matter what I try the second controller will not accept the buttons assigned to it, and neither the triggers or the X and O buttons will work for accelerating/braking. Instead this must be done using the right hand analogue stick which is almost unusable. I have tried reassigning the controllers after beginning the race only to have the same problem on the alternate controller with the controls for Player 1 always being correct.

Has anyone else experienced this, or are there any bright ideas on how to fix it?

Have you configured the controller in the option menu ? It may need it ?
 
Yep, tried and failed. For some reason regardless of the configuration assigned and saved to it in the option menu it will revert to type and none of the trigger or keypad buttons will do anything. Very strange.
 
Ok in another thread someone asked why non of his buttons on the D-pad worked when he wanted to race .. It turned out his D-pad was not fully charged ? It may be this ? Other than that i have no idea.
 
YES i have the same problem! have tried everything whit no results.. its getting realy frustrating.. any answer yet?
