Best Motoring International - Volume 9 has just been released here in AU, in the bonus section it contains a 10min clip of Ahikiho Nakaya (Professor Nakaya) walking around the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show and talking about some of the concept cars/new models etc.

They stop over at the GT4 area and AN decides to give it a go, I thought some of you guys would be interesting in his impressions of GT4 (from a non-gamer)

** note, he could not shift to save his life! kept on clicking the shifter forward and back really fast and it wasn’t "locking" in the gears.

Reporter: "SO the game feels real?"

AN " Yeah, it feels real. You even get the kickback jolt on the steering wheel"

AN " Needs improvement on the pedals though. It's too light so you really cant tell if your foot is applying pressure or decelerating. The shifts were akward too"

AN " But it's amazing how this GT4 already has the Lancer Evolution VIII MR included in the game."
 
I have the video. (It is the worst B.M that I own.)

When Nakaya sat down to play GT4 I was glued to the tv. Then I seen he would be using a P.O.S wheel/shifter/pedal setup, and my excitement quickly faded away.

On behalf of all Logitech Driving Force Pro owners I would like to thank you for calling our wheel a P.O.S. wheel/shifter/pedal setup. :mad:

Sure. But is it even based on actual experience? I.e. did you yourself try that wheel with GT4 Prologue yet? Or with a PC game like the DTM Mod for F1C? I mean I agree that the pedals are a bit light, but I always drive with my shoes off as do most other people with these wheels which compensates for that. And sure the wheel doesn't come with a clutch, but GT4 doesn't support one yet either, and probably wont until GT5 comes out.

So while I appreciate an honest opinion, as long as it isn't supported with any decent arguments, it's not going to hold much value. ;)
 
Can anyone post the clip maybe compressed as DIVX?

I would like to see this guy and maybe laugh at his exploits at GT4.

Hey Monster7, why were you disappointed by that Best Motoring? I was about to buy it, but now i'm hesitating.


Oh, and Nakaya is just some jandom Japanese guy they pulled off the street.

i think nakaya thought that the gears were supposed to stay in the position he put it in as if it was an h shifter style.
 
Are you talkin about the last BMI video, "Fuji Fast?" I haven't watched the Tokyo Car Show (?) Stuff at the end yet...but I liked the rest of it. The lap of Fuji in the Hakuyosa (sp?) original Skyline GT-R was awesome. Too bad cars don't sound like that anymore. :(
 
Akihiko Nakaya is probably my favourite of the BEST MOTORing reviewers. In a nutshell he's a motoring journalist and motorsports driver. Having won the Japan F3 Championship in '88, the '91 Japan F3000 Championship and the Japan Touring Car Championship in '96 to name a few. He studied mechanical engineering in college and has immense knowledge and logical analysis of car behavior.

Regarding the Driving Force Pro. What happened with him still happens with me at times. When you change gear by quickly pulling the gearlever (Naka-san is known for his lightning-quick shifting) it springs back and shifts down a gear. That's the only reason I can think of why he was having trouble. But come on, I mean the guy is a proffesional racing driver, shurely he knows what he is talking about.

Agreed. He makes me want to learn Japanese, so I can understand what he's saying in BM. :D

I've never experienced that, but you could be right. I am much more used to driving with a computer than with a real car, so my whole body is completely tuned in to light, subtle movements rather than what you'd need in some cars. I guess that compared to real shifting this knob would take a lot of getting used to and perhaps he'd have been much better off using the paddles on the back of the wheel (my preferred method as well).
 
Two points.

After a week with the Driving Force Pro I have to say it is the best wheel I have ever used, and far, far better than the pad.

It is very realistic, highlighted by the fact that friends and familar who are not gamers, and struggle with a pad, within 2 laps were driving reasonably with the wheel.

As for Best Motoring, it is easily the best motoring DVD/TV type program and is like a real world version of GT.

As for the GT4P feature on BEST Motoring, it was only a 5 minute segment, with favourable impressions given of the game. If I'm not mistaken the gearstick was also knackered!

BTW my real car has paddle shifters and a sequential gearshift, and they are just as lightweigh to use as on the Driving Force Pro. The peddles are only slightly harder on the real car also. Only competition paddle shifters will have a heavy action when in use.

Oh, and the BMI Fugi Fast DVD is easily the best in the series so far, only matched by the latest DVD. The feature about the Group C cars and the early Skylines is awsome.

Do you know BEST MOTORing? It's a japanese monthly car video magazine. I'm sure you've heard of it.
Nakaya is (or should I say was) one of its reviewers.

Having won the Japan F3 Championship in '88, the '91 Japan F3000 Championship and the Japan Touring Car Championship in '96 to name a few. He explained every technical detail of a car and their consequences in its dynamics. I also liked his shifting a lot.

Unfortunately it looks like he's out of BEST MOTORing. 👎

Hmm i had that problem on my last wheel. It shifted up three shifts when i only shifted down once.. Dont want to go offtopic here but.. Do anyone know if there are different version of the wheel itself? Im now on my third wheel all and all and this is what has happend to me.
1st wheel, gears messed up (as described) and the 80% gas issue
2nd wheel, gear was fine but still had the problem with the gaspedal.
3rd wheel, no troubles what so ever and the wheel is a heck of a lot more quiet then the last two.

Anyway, what i was thinking is, can it not be that Nakaya just happend to have bad luck with the wheel?
