I list some chord progressions out of the key, out of the ordinairy, that I found profound, magical, escapist. Together with examples of where to find them.
"The Profound"
Cmin - Bmaj
Also called "the Metamorphosis". It can be found at the end of the break of Porcelain - Moby.
"The Majestic"
Cmaj - Abmaj
It shows up as the theme of the elves from the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as being the whole harmony of Inside, by Moby again.
"Dimension shift"
Cmaj - F#maj
Combining the distant tonal relationship of the tritone together with the bright, albeit distant, major chords. It shows up in many Hollywood films when the hero finds himself in uncharted territory or there is a drastic event. E.g. at the end of Jason X when Jason transforms into a cyborg.
"Profound Evil"
Cmin - Abmin
The ear expects for the second chord to be major but instead gets deceived by the darker minor chord instead. The effect is that of surroundment by evil. It shows up from the Halloween theme to Count Dracula movies, to documentaries about the dark history of UFOs.
