Secret meetings held with several studios to find best-suited developer

Microsoft is in talks with several European independent studios to bring the Project Gotham Racing series back to the Xbox 360, Develop can reveal.
A trusted source told Develop that Microsoft remains undecided on which studio to hand the project to.
Project Gotham became a multi-million-selling series when it was steered by Liverpool-based studio Bizarre Creations, though the developer’s involvement ceased in 2007.
Turn-10 has for a number of months been considered the most likely candidate to develop future Project Gotham titles. The Microsoft-owned studio has, with the help of extensive outsourcing, developed three successful Forza racing games.
Yet Microsoft’s hunt for a studio partner suggests the project will not be brought in-house.

Bizarre Creations was acquired by Activision in 2007 – a deal which saw its IP scatter across the industry. Sega holds IP rights to action-shooter The Club, while EA owns Boom Boom Rocket. Bizarre retains the Geometry Wars rights while Microsoft owns Project Gotham and all its assets.
Project Gotham Racing, the spiritual successor to Metropolis Street Racer, had bolstered the original Xbox’s launch line-up along with fellow blockbuster Halo. The series went from cult-hit status to global fame, and became a key product in Microsoft’s seminal online service, Live.
Shane Kim, the former boss of Microsoft Game Studios, said in 2008 that Project Gotham Racing would return at some stage.
In 2005 Bill Gates described Project Gotham as his favourite video game.
Develop has contacted Microsoft for comment.

PGR Making A Comeback? (Kotaku)

PGR Revival Underway (Develop)

So, Turn 10 isn't taking helm after all. If this comes to fruition, one of the best arcade racers around will be in your pocket, robbing you of your monies.

Discuss.

That actually makes since that Turn10 won't be doing PGR5. Sounds like Turn10 is VERY busy with FM4 or whatever their next game is going to be. (Don't know if there will be another FM on the 360.)

They need to be careful on who they choose. Otherwise, they could kill the series.

I don't see the point to be honest, Microsoft already has the Forza series to cover the racing game genre, why would Microsoft essentially want to compete with it's own game?

Because PGR sells like it's no one's business? 💡

activision may be getting rid of bizzare creations so i dont know if this is gonna come out sorry to be a buzz kill check ign and gametrailers

You realize that has no relation to the OP, right?

The PGR name is owned by MS. Would be quite funny if Bizarre come out with MSR2 whilst MS release PGR5.

Because PGR sells like it's no one's business? 💡

Let's face it, it will be PGR by name only, it will have new developers who will more than likely completely overhaul the original formula, there's no guarantee that the game will sell on name alone.

I suppose you have proof of these claims?

What claims? I said it will have new developers, that's a fact. I said they will "more than likely" overhaul the original formula and I also said that the game won't sell on name alone, which is true for any game. So what claims would you like evidence for?

Whoops, I may have misread your post. :dunce:

One thing I can say is we don't whether or not PGR will have new developers, so that's not a fact until officially stated otherwise. Just because MS is looking for a new developer doesn't mean they're going to hire them for the job - remember, Activision seems to be letting go of Bizarre.

Microsoft may very well get them all back together.

Ok so technically it's not a 100% fact but judging by the reports it seems almost certain. Anyway I still feel that with MS having Forza as their flagship racing series, reviving PGR is a waste of time and resources, also would Bizarre Creations want to do another PGR? They seem to have went in a different direction with Blur (a seriously over-hyped and over-rated game if I may add)

You do realize that alongside Halo, PGR is one of the largest contributor's to the success that is Xbox Live? Not bringing back PGR (and not destroying any of the fundamentals) would be quite irresponsible at the end of the day, and Bizarre has always made other games on the side even while working with Microsoft...I see no reason why they wouldn't let them expand that gamebase (assuming they reacquire them).

All I can say to that is times change, just because PGR was an integral part of xbox live's success around what now? 7 or 8 years ago xbox live launched? doesn't mean they should continue the series with new developers just because of the name. If Sony decided to (for talking sake) revive a racing game that was popular years ago I'd be saying the exact same thing, why bother when you have Gran Turismo? Put the time and resources into coming up with an original game like Heavy Rain instead of putting out another better than average racing game that can't compare in gameplay terms to GT.

Because GT nor Forza appeal to the mass market, and only the niche?

Which is why FM3 tried to branch out and appeal to that wider audience. This isn't the PC front where a developer (any developer) can solely depend on that niche market and get in good sales. Different games, whether they be in the same genre or not, are meant to appeal to different audiences or a collective audience all at once.

In all honesty I think it's impossible for a driving game to branch out and appeal to a wider audience, you're either a driving fan or your not. Some games such as Outrun might draw in a few more followers due to it's total arcade style gameplay, but as a whole driving games only appeal to a select group of gamers. I'd be extremely surprised if I heard a gamer say they like PGR and didn't like Forza

If I were to make PGR 5's car list, then Id do it, PGR3 style. After all, life begins again at 170 Miles an hour.

I think, with Bizarre being cut closed, MS might try to bring it back from the dead to build this. That is what I would do if I were MS. In fact, I'd be jumping for joy that Activision was too stupid to know what to do with BC.

Then again, if Bizarre Creations winds up on the selling block, I'm sure there are other parties that would be interested in it. We'll see what happens to them and to the PGR franchise.

Also, I didn't like PGR3. It was the worst one of the series, in my opinion. Just because some of the car models weren't that great and the physics sucked. PGR4 and PGR2 are my top 2 PGR games. And 2 was the only one to feature trucks and SUVs via DLC.

Too bad GT's gameplay sucks and PGR4 is still the better and more fun game. GT5 couldn't even get physics right(racing soft in rain, downforce, drafting etc etc..) Dont worry Forza 4 will drop in Nov so there is still time for you too buy a xbox..:dopey:

And that's a confirmed title too. :D

A lot of games on that same list that put a smile on my face. E3 needs to hurry up.

If it's true I may very well be buying a 360 as F4 looks good and I've always been a fan of PGR. Fairly certain I still have one of those crappy 360 wheels in my basement as well(had a 360 a few years ago until it broke outside warranty).

Can't quite tell how FM4 looks quite yet. All they've shown of it is the laser-scanned photomode cars and actual, real life racing footage. No actual gameplay has been shown. Also...if they're laser scanning cars, I don't know if the livery editor will appear in FM4 'cause I'm not entirely sure if custom liveries would work with the photomode cars. If it's there, it might be that your design show up only in race mode...so...

But yeah, MS is looking for a developer and Lucid Games is free....hmm....maybe maybe. If Lucid wants to work with MS again, that is. Seems like a lot of First party MS developers jump ship after a while. I wouldn't be surprised to see Turn10 leave MS after another game or two.

Better get to reading in the FM4 thread, then. The livery editor will return & will allow people to import their FM3 designs. It's one of the game's biggest sale points, so they'd be stupid to drop it.

LOL, T10 isn't going anywhere. One of MS' highest paid developers.

Now Bungie has left, T10 is MS's premiere studio.

Besides, some of the newer cars like the Veyron and DLC cars were laser scanned and they had liveries in photomode.
