As some of you know, I got a free '81 280ZX 2+2 GL, fully loaded with all options, runs like a dream, just needs some (read: alot) of rust fixing. I'm going to turn it into a driftmobile, because it's light, stiff, and it's got a certain cool factor to it. Current mods are as follows

Engine:
280Z Exhaust Manifold (I don't know why...)
Full Mandrel Bent Exhaust
265cc (turbo) Injectors
It's my understanding that it's got a cam, though this remains to be seen

Suspension:
KYB Gas-A-Just Struts/Shocks
Unknown Brand Springs (Most likely MSA)
MSA or Addco Upgraded Swaybars
Gold/Silver 14x6 Indented 6 Spokes
195/70's out back, 185/60's up front

Future Mods:
Ram air intake
Need to adjust the ignition timing and fuel for max power
Possibly need to adjust cam timing
Metric Butt-Tons of chassis reinforcing
Imperial Butt-Tons of rust fixing
Nismo, Kaaz, or Cusco LSD (If it doesn't already have one...)

And here's pics of the major rust damage...

Notice the floorboard (or lack thereof) - Too much nitrous, I think. I'm surprised the welds on the intake are still in place. I discovered these areas after I went outside with my "rust finder" (Big flathead screwdriver). Rusted spots include, but may not be limited to - Around the gas filler cap, front strut towers, rear strut towers, rear quarter panels, doors, door sill panels, below rear quarter windows, around the rear license plate area, under the rear bumper, and below the front bumper. Most of those areas are extremely small, less than 1" spots, some are larger (rear fenders most notable).

I probably knocked off 10lbs of rust, at least. Next step will be to get all the jagged parts shaved down and get some rust-fixing primer on it.

Race Idiot
Oh man this looks so awesome, keep us updated with lots of pics!

Lots of rust eh, it reminds me of this guy and his 240sx.

I knocked more rust off of the Z in an hour with a screwdriver than I can even see on that car. Whereas he has a rust hole in one of the frame rails, I'm missing about 10" of frame rail because it rusted into oblivion.

By the end of the month, I hope to have rear STB's, front STB and ST-Firewall brace, my intake, and lots of body work done.

Looks like a good project, good luck with it and keep us posted 👍.

Cool. I'll keep an eye on this one. I've got an '82 sitting in the garage that i just retired from daily services about a month ago and will undergo work once i get off my lazy ass.

The rust looks really bad dude.

got any more shots of the car?

Yeah, I took a few after a 2 minute paintjob with gloss black to protect the rust from the rain we're supposed to get for the next week.

Notice the rust debris laying all around the car in this pic?

A shot from last night, before I started to pull off bubbled paint and get into the really bad stuff...

And here's what keeps me going on the project...

Rocket fuel!!

Nice car! I wish I had my chevy with me now to work on.. I expect to find some rust hiding in the body.. :dopey:

Ghost - sign up at www.grmotorsports.com and get friendly with the forum guys over there. If ever there was a group of guys with top notch advice on how to stabilize and improve a near-dead sports car, that's it. Particularly the $2006 Challenge guys, who can't spend any money but typically invest a lot of time instead. Good luck with the project!

Update! I finally fixed the clutch issues, replaced the totally shot clutch slave cylinder and bled all the old fluid out and replaced it with brand new. The clutch was frozen to the flywheel (it sat for 5 years), so I took it for a spin in 1st - 5,000rpm came and the clutch snapped free. Woot for Zed Powah!

Ghost,
Nice looking Z. Sad to see that much rust, you have a great adventure infront of you. My Z also has rust and I had to replace the floorboards and Im looking really hard at doing the framerails right now before it gets much worse. I dont know if I have time this winter..no garage now.
I got my Z out of a junkyard in Fayetteville NC in 1999 for 1000.00. Practically had to beg the guy to let me have it, he just wanted it to sit there.
I dont know if your over at Zdriver.com, but you should sign up and get on the s130 forum, theres some good guys there.
