Proper gearing for low end power?

Ok, so a few of my cars with big block v8's in them have a good low end, but bad top end on the torque graph. How should I go about tuning the transmission so that the gears start lower in the rpm range? ( say stock is between 5000-6500 rpm, how could I make it 4000-6500rpm)

Right now I am setting the top speed lower, then making all of the gears bigger / longer. I don't feel that this is the best way to do this, and that there must be a better method. I also know about shifting early in manual, but I want somthing that would work for auto too.

What I would do is tune it the first way, find the rpm where you don't accelerate as fast, should correlate to the power band graph, and shift earlier to keep it in that power band.
