Prototypes Seen in Hotel Parking Lot!!!!!!

I was going to the movie theater today to see "I, Robot." Right next to the theater is a hotel. In the parking lot there was an unmasked Smart ForFour!!!! Smart doesn't come to America for a couple of years!! Parked right next to it was an unmasked M-B A-Class! Those don't come out for a couple of years either!!!! They both had test numbers on the back, and the A-Class had a huge German word on the rear. Both had California plates, so they must be testing them across the country. I would have taken pics but I didn't have my digital camera. IT WAS SO COOL!
 
Smart ForFours are available in Canada, and Washington DC and many other cities have imported Smart Citys.
 
They are also available in Australia now also.
 
I saw a Smart at LAX in may, so they're around. Of course, I saw so many that I wouldn't even notice if I saw one now, seeing as how they're almost as common as those damned Vespas in Italy.
 
I know all the big cities and states get all the cars that no one else gets to see. I mean, here in Colorado, we never get anything first. But one question.....are these cars officially legal on US streets? I mean, I though Smarts didn't meet our crash stamdards.
