MachOnes Complete Review on the revamped version of the classic Area 51 Arcade game.

Breifing: Area 51 is the revamped, tech savvy version of the classic Area 51 arcade game. The advances in the game mechanism are insanely improved and addicting. Anybody that loves a fast-paced, scary and skill-requiring FPS, this is your game. For this review, we are using the PS2 version.

Review:

Graphics

Overall: *****/***** (5 of 5 stars)

Weapons: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Level/World Detail: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Sprites,Sparks and Explosion Detail: ****/***** (4 of 5)

---

In-Depth Review: The graphical detail in this game is simply amazing. From the sprites to the weapons, everything is detailed to the last bit. This is the GT4 of FPS (and it doesn't lag the system, which is amazing). The weapons are ungodly looking. My personal favorite(s) are the Shotgun,BBG and Meson Cannon, as they are so highly detailed.

Sound/Audio

Overall: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Weapons: ****/***** (4 of 5)

World/Level Objects: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Explosions, Steam, Electric, etc.: *****/***** (5 of 5)

---

In-Depth Review: The sound in this game is also amazing. The variety of the sounds is shocking. Every surface, weapon, grenade and everything else has a unique sound. The utilization of surround sound is also perfected in Area 51. If you have 5.1 surround sound you are in luck. My friend has a big screen with 5.1 in his fathers basement, so we took the game to his house, popped it in the PS2, put the lights down, cranked the sound and wow. Talk about scary. The depth of the sound and the use of EAX is too good to be true.

Gameplay

Overall: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Career/Story Mode: *****/***** (5 of 5)

2P Split Screen: ****/***** (4 of 5)

Online/LAN (Up to 16 players on PS2): *****/***** (5 of 5)

---

In-Depth Review: The gameplay in Area 51 is ridiculously great. The story mode is jam packed with new things to find. And playing story mode is NOT easy. You will do about 70% of the missions at least twice on EASY mode. Split screen is great too, but it is still split screen, so 1 point off for it (although the maps are the bomb!). Multiplayer Online or LAN is great. The USB headset is supported and you can play up to 15 other players online. The maps are too fun for your own good. Plus having Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and etc. game modes really mixes things up.

Controls (etc.)

Overall: ****/***** (4 of 5)

Ease Of Use: ****/***** (4 of 5)

Controls: ****/***** (4 of 5)

---

In-Depth Review: The ease of use and controls are where Area 51 takes a hit. The controls are pretty easy to use for FPS masters, but beginners may have trouble learning the controls and tricks of the trade. The controls can become confusing and the sensitivity of the joysticks (X and Y or Vertical and Horizontal axis) usually varies by controller, which can be annoying having to continously change the sensitivity in Profile Options. Overall the controls and ease of use are fairly good, but arent perfect (but hey,the PS2 controller isnt that great for FPS, im sure the Xbox controller setup is better).

Overall Game Review

Graphics: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Audio/Sound: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Gameplay: *****/***** (5 of 5)

Controls (etc.): ****/***** (4 of 5)

Overall Game Rating:*****/***** (5 of 5 stars)

The Bottom Line: Area 51 is the perfect game for any hardcore FPS player. If you love a fast paced FPS that leaves little time to breathe during gameplay, buy Area 51. The game is worth the money. Im sure the Xbox and PC versions are great too, since they usually can both carry higher standards than the PS2.

K first, great review. Second, are you serious? 5 out of 5? I rented this game a while back, and thought it was great at first. Then as I got farther I completely lost interest, ended up not playing for three days before I brought it back. I didn't like the part where you get infected and have the ability to become an alien. Sure, I know they were trying to make the game more diverse, but I really hated having to do it. And really there are some parts that get so difficult the only way to beat them is to turn alien and melee the hell out of everyone. It was fun at first, but got pretty boring for me after a while. :indiff:

Your Opinion Sir, Is Your Opinion, Not Mine :).

You apparently aren't someone who likes a good FPS that mixes things up constantly. YOU didn't like a single part, so you think the game sucked? Being infected is what made the game that much more in-depth. And apparently you haven't played the game on Hard mode. If you think all you do is run around melee'ing the hell out of the opposition, your so wrong. Plus your basing the rating off of just a Campaign mode when we have things like graphics, sound, controls and even multiplayer to rate? That' a bit overboard, don't you think?

Good review, I might have a look at it. Does it lag online?

Not really (in my experience). It probably really dependso n your connection, the hosts connection, max players, player in,etc.

I really reccomend at least renting it to try it out.

Played the demo on xbox today, very good but pretty hard also. Only the second FPS game ive ever played:D
