Well, I finally broke down and bought the PS2 Linux distribution. I'm not planning on doing any developement ... I just wanted to get something cool to play with for a while. It'll be nice to have a web kiosk at the TV as well. Weeeeee.

I'll tell you guys what I think when it shows up.

I take it you got the HD for the PS2 with that? I remember awhile back signing a petition to bring it to the U.S. but I don't know if I signed the petition or not. Thats cool, have fun with it.

Here's a Pic of the Linux Kit

The Linux kit is $200. Comes with everyhing in the picture above.

Network adaptor
40gb Hard drive
keyboard / mouse
VGA adapter

The point of it is to do software development for the PS2 ... and to just dink around with it in general. I'm not going to be doing much other than web surfing and such. I just wanted something else to do with my PS2, and I figured this was pretty simple. Hopefully it won't be to difficult to get around on it. All the other Linux installs I've had were X86 and there's tons of support out there. As far as I know there is only one website for PS2 linux help.

Thanks for the link! I might check out some of that stuff too.

Well the box showed up today. Yup, all that stuff is in it. I'll be setting it up tonight and I'll let you guys know how it goes. I need to pick up another memory card on my way home.

Click "Add to cart". This is the only way to purchase Linux for the Playstation 2.

I've got it installed, and functioning. There are some things that we'll have to wait on, but hopefully the community will get there. I'm not interested in doing much coding and whatever - I just felt like supporting the Linux community and I think Sony is pretty cool. I also thought I should go ahead and get this before they give up on it (:

It's really a nicely done package, and once again, for $200 it's not a bad purchase. I'm going to see if I can get some different software packages running on it like Netscape and XMMS so I can use it for a web kiosk / mp3 player at my AV receiver.

A friend of mine found a website using a ps2 for a webserver, We going to see if we can set it up on his HD TV at 1080I. I hope We can get it to run DIVX Rips, MP3 Files. Here is a useful link if I have not posted it already, also check on Google Groups.

I'd like to get Apache running on mine and serve some web junk. Basically I want it to serve a review that I write of getting it all set up and not much else.

It's a toy for me, nothing honestly useful. But it is up and running! Here's a picture of it running the RC5 crack from Distributed.net

is it just like linux on a pc? or are you unable to do certain things. can you read media that you put in the dvd-rom? if so it would be neat to have the ps2 able to play divx files or svcds. it would give it more actual utility also.

let me know.

Hopefully PS2 Linux can run DIVX, Mpeg, SVCD files, I wonder if Motzilla works on it?

I'm not really sure. You would have to do some hefty research and stuff. Most of the standard software you would use to do that on an X86 Linux install probably won't work on a PS2 because of the extremely custom hardware.

I think you have to recompile Motzilla's source code on the PS2 to get program to run.

Yeah pretty much. There is a good bit of RPMs available on the playstation2-linux.com website. However, there are no web browsers who's name I recognize.

Have you checked UseNet (Newsgroups) about any information regarding your problem?

You're going to have a hell of a time in the forums there if you talk about porting programs over from x86 processor computers.... Back when I thought I could convince my parents into letting me get that(didn't work, gave up after a year or so) I checked out the forums constantly. It was so annoying to ask people how to port games like Unreal Tourny onto the PS2. The only portable stuff that works on the PS2 Linux are C++ and C programs(I think). And words of advice:
Before you post a question on the boards there, use the search, or you'll get |3itched out BIG time!
