My problem is as follows

I normally leave my PS2 plugged in, and as it is a slimline, it doesn't have the switch in the back. Up until about a week ago, this was fine, however, recently it has been turning itself on. When I turn it off, I make absolutely certain that the red light is on, and not the green one. I watch it for a few seconds, to make sure I turned it off, and didn't just reset it. I then go to bed. When I get up the next morning, I turn my TV on, and low and behold, I am faced with the start screen of whatever game it was I was playing the night before.

Yes, the first couple of times I thought "well, I must not have turned it off properly, but after a week of it, I am figuring that something is up.

Do you guys have any suggestions apart from unplugging it (as that is not the easiest thing to do where I have it), and any ideas as to what may be causing this?

I had the same issue with my Standard PS2. This is when I would power it down without the toggle switch. The Green light would turn red.

I attributed this to power surges that I was getting that was causing the PS2 trigger it to turn on. I had to instruct everyone in the house to turn off the PS2 with the rocker switch instead of just holding down the front button. Perhaps you are having power fluctuations as well.

That's what I was thinking as well. Is there A way to test this theory? I have a surge protected power board for my computer (you know, the one with the phone jacks, 6 sockets, and a switch), would that cut out the fluctuations in the power?

No, because a surge protector doesn't control that. It controls how fast the power is reimplemented into whatever is plugged in. It should, however, prevent you PS2 from powering on by itself due to power fluctuations. To test the theory, plug your PS2 into the power board, and flip the on switch off and then on again. It should not turn back on. If it does, than either
  1. You have a crappy/damaged surge protector or, more likely
  2. Your PS2 power pack may be damaged.
  3. The experiment was destined to fail because it wasn't a good test in the first place. I will, however, say that my computer doesn't turn back on if it is turned off by the surge strip, so what have you.

My computer is set to stay off after a power-out, so it won't come back on either. On the other hand, the PS2 wasn't on this morning when I got up, and the power DID go off last night (I know this because I got up late as my alarm didn't go off, and was flashing 00:00). So I am at a loss as to what it could be. I am about to ring Sony to see what they have to say.

-edit-

I rang Sony and they said that it sounds like a faulty power supply. They want me to send it to them so that they can check it out. I will be without a PS2 for a while I think. I might try a mate's power supply and see if it makes a difference, rather that send it away just yet.
