we are happy to confirm that you can use the PS4 Dualshock 4 controller wirelessly on the PS3, thanks to this update.

Simply plug your PS4 controller into the PS3 via USB. Next head to accessory settings, then go to the scanning stage. Once there, hold down the PS button and the Share button on the PS4 controller to begin pairing.

Let us know if this worked for you and also what PS3 games you are still playing that work with a Dualshock 4 controller.

Sweet I need two new controllers for ps3 the boy keeps smashing them now I can buy ps4 pads and have extras when I buy a ps4 ..... Sony u dirty dog I love u

While it is nice that they are more compatible now, there is still no vibration support with the DS4 on PS3 and PS button on the DS4 won't take you to the XMB on PS3 either. Hopefully there will be another update that allows the DS4 to be fully supported.

Just a shame that buttons are now digitals on the DS4 :nervous:. They are all analogics on the DS3 :)

Why can't Sony make the other way around works, DS2/DS3 with USB on PS4, that would be awesome, or do they ?

As someone who stopped playing PS3 games for a long time after buying a DS4 because of how bad the DS3 feels by comparison, I'd have to say no, that would be awful. I like the DS4 so much I bought two (one for my PC, one for my laptop/Ouya and now PS3 as well, I guess) and I don't even have a PS4 yet!

Now if only they'd enable the DS4 for use with the Vita...

The reason I wanted the backward compatibility on PS4 is because I heard DS4 has no analog pressure input on the face buttons. This is very crucial for playing racing games, I used DS2 on PS3 - GT6, and it's a lot better than DS3 when it comes to accurate gas/brake modulation + feel.

If the DS4 has better ergonomics and comfortable to hold, why can't Sony make a different version of it with full analogue buttons ... :( I'd buy it in a heart beat.

@Ridox2JZGTE that's true, the DS4 has digital buttons, but it doesn't matter because even if you could use the DS3 with the PS4, no games would support analogue buttons anyway. Also every racing game bar GT5/6 has moved on to using the triggers which are infinitely easier to modulate than the buttons could ever be, especially as you just said the DS2 was far better in that respect than the DS3.

I have always felt much better with buttons than triggers but I have to use triggers more often now because racing games require trigger controls. Even though I still woner why games don't allow customizable controls.

The DS3 felt pretty good in my opinion but I always felt DS2 is the best and personsally, I would rather DS2 over DS4, as DS4 to me feels a bit awkward to me.

I have to ask, why cant you simply title this thread "You can now use ds4 on ps3"?

I've been hearing mixed reviews of the DS4 and its quality and durability, so I'm not sold on the idea on buying a DS4 without a PS4.

Why is it that with each new generation of console its controllers seem to be downgraded?

I don't know who you've been listening to, but the DS4 is the best controller I've ever used, no question. The thing is it's kind of subjective as not everyone has the same hands and some prefer the Dpad/left stick switch, but the D-pad, triggers, stick cap shape and design of the DS4's case (the DS1-3 used a clamshell that was split exactly in half which was kind of flimsy and got worse with age, the DS4's should age better), not to mention the contour of the grips, lack of muck-collecting indentations and the texture of the whole thing... Yeah, I love the DS4. I don't hate the LED as much as I thought I would but the battery life is a bit of a shame. The lack of analogue buttons doesn't bother me in the slightest, only MGS2/3 and GT's archaic button layout benefitted from them.

Owning and playing the crap out of my DS4 I find it much better than the DS3 (and the 360 controller for that matter).

The only problem with it (if you started used for everything like I did for my PC and PS4) is the rubber in the analogue sticks, for some reason it wears off really fast, I'm pretty sure they can be replaced and they offer better be, but they they wear out relationally fast (much like 360 analogue controls if you use them too much).

However, I have my controller since last November and it hasn't worn out, that said, the grip surface is starting to become more and more loose and is starting to wear off.

Also, DS4 DO NOT WORK, the PS3 recognizes it as a peripheral, so it has the same function of a Bluetooth headset, it does nothing other than scroll the menu and it doesn't work with games, otherwise I would be making way better times in GT6 and better scores in Ace Combat, among other things.

 This news is a bit like a trojan horse, Sony's gateway drug to you buying a PS4. Once you have one it just makes sense to get the console it works with!

First you get comfortable with the DS4 on your PS3.... next thing you know your at the till handing over your monies!

In my defence, no game worked on my PS3 with my DS4.

However, potential buyers must know, otherwise they will found themselves buying a controller that doesn't work for what they want, not to mention that some features like vibration might be absent as well.

Hence why it's a hidden feature, I suppose. Maybe they'll patch in a driver so it works properly, I guess right now the PS3 just sees it as any other HID controller, just like PCs, Macs and even the Ouya (though the mapping is all wrong) do right now. The added wireless capability is curious, though.

Maybe having it registry as a Bluetooth device might open the doors for a PC Bluetooth connectivity (which last time I checked wasn't available).

I could use it with a PC and Bluetooth, having the "mouse" function it will do wonders for me.

The original DS4 to Xinput wrapper tool let you use the trackpad as a mouse... But only within Windows itself. I'd hoped it would let me play point & click games on my TV without a mouse but no, it's not recognised in games for some reason. At least not the ones I tried, anyway. Maybe a newer wrapper has fixed that? I don't even know where to look for such a thing any more.

I remember going to a store where they had a PS4 game demo and I tried. The DS4 was ok but I didn't feel as comfortable as I am with the DS2,DS3,Gamepad,360 Controllers. Could be because I'm not used to it.

Hope they properly roll out functionality for the PS3. I've always found the DS3 a little too small and uncomfortable especially after using a 360 controller.

Curious how RDR works with the DS4, but not the GTA's, despite the fact they run on basically the same engine. If it gets to the point where more games are supported, I'm definitely buying one, I'll need a decent controller when I get a PC anyway.
