The PS3 hardware is more than capable for the internet its just the operating system or rather the web browser which is not optimized. The browser on the PS3 is Sony's own based on the NetFront browser and has only been updated a few times (I think twice) since launch.

As it hasn't be prioritized that much it lacks many of the latest plugins like for flash mainly because they have gone the 'app' route with catch up services and content embedded in the XMB.

Even if the browser was improved to more modern standards there is one hardware issue which holds it back which is the small amount of RAM the system has. You ask has anyone ever upgraded the hardware in the PS3, well as far as I'm aware no (hard drive swaps don't really count) although there was one scientist talking about retrofitting more RAM to the system. Sony has even considered that as an option for improving games in the future.

There is currently one glimmer of hope though. Sony is equipping its Bravia TV's with Google TV software which includes the Chrome browser and its rumored that this whole package will come to PS3 which would make browsing way better.

Hope that helps,

Robin.

Yeah, that's what I've been hearing too. I really hope that's true...
