I will be getting a PS3 at some point, but I don't have a TV.

What I do have, is a computer monitor with an HDMI input.

While I have no doubt that I can connect a PS3 to it, the problem is, I will have no sound.

Could someone tell me what my options are?

Thanks.

Hi Nether, welcome to GTPlanet! You can select where to output the audio in your PS3's system settings, so if you have a receiver which accepts an optical audio connection, that would be your best option. Otherwise, find some speakers (or an older receiver) which accept input from standard RCA red/white audio connectors, and use that with a "Multi Out" cable connected to your PS3.

My HDMI monitor has a "mini soundcard" if you will. If I output my PS3 sound over HDMI, you can connect a pair of headphones to the monitor's 3.5mm jack and listen away. You should check if yours has one too otherwise do as Jordan said and select a more appropiate audio output.

If a pair of headphones works with your 3.5mm jack (provided you have one), you could also connect a set of desktop speakers like these, for example. For the price, the reviews are pretty decent, too.

Yes, I know I switched from .com to .ca as .ca had no reviews yet.

That's the one I have. Very affordable but good for being an entry level home theater. DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, Dolby Pro-Logic II and 96 Khz audio feeds -- One optical input, no HDMI. Satisfies my needs, at least until I can afford better. :)

This makes a huge difference when switching from standard audio to 5.1 when watching Blu-Rays and DVDs too, if you're into that.

Before we start running the gamut of your available options, what kind of price range are you looking at?

+1 👍 Have the same system, works a treat. though I expect your looking for a cheaper alternative. As TB says, whats your price range before your bombarded with links to expensive kit.

If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI].

Quite disapointed with this message... I own stereo speakers and going to buy a TV set and would like to hear sound from both. :indiff:

Any ideas? 💡

I have a Vizio TV with Dolby Digital 5.1 processing abailities. My PS3 runs audio and video via HDMI to the TV in Dolby Digital 5.1, then I have a digital optical going out from the TV to my Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system.

I can turn the TV speakers on or off in my TV options. I leave them on because my wife doesn't enjoy surround sound when watching "Annoying family reality TV show."

So, my suggestion is to shop wisely while buying and check your options.

Was just looking around for an answer to this and was looking at the back of my monitor and it looks like my monitor has a headphone jack too.

Problem solved.

Thanks everyone.
