The battery died in two of my PS3 controllers. I replaced them both but one wont work at all and one will only work when pluged in with the cable.

I've tried reseting the controller by pressing that small button on the back, but didn't work. I think the one that wont come on at all is FUBAR.

I also can't switch the controller setting from 2 to 1 on the one that does come on. The controller is constantly charging up. It will stop charging from time to time but just for a brief moment.

Is there a step I'm missing after you replace the battery? Did a search and no fix came up. YouTube video had the same problem I had and no fixes there either.

Anybody have a solution besides buy a new controller. (Though, I think that's my only option at this point.)

Could it be that you were sold dodgy batteries? Dualshock 3s should work (when plugged in, of course) with no battery at all, at least the revisions I've tried do and I see no reason for them to change that, so I'd give that a shot to see if they're usable that way. If they are then it's bad batteries, if not then I guess it's bad controllers. Though if neither work maybe they just won't work without batteries.

Though this wouldn't explain the endless charging or the inability to reassign the controller, so I have no idea what that's about. How old are they? Are they quite creaky? Next time you open them up, see if the flexible PCB is connected to the, er, inflexible PCB (the board the battery plugs into) with a connector or if it's just pushed against some pads with a piece of sponge. Again this doesn't really help but it can sometimes account for general controller weirdness - if the latter type isn't seated properly and some contacts short out, the controller will switch off. It's harmless though, remove the short and it'll power back on again when asked. Also on the controller that won't power up, check for evidence of liquid damage, dust or anything that could be conductive that might be causing a short.

Like I posted, the one controller will work when plugged in, but my cable is too short.

I didn't do anything to the controller, I just replaced the battery. I don't think if I did touch something, it'll cause this sort of problem. Especially since there's a YouTube video with a guy who had the same problem, I know there's something wrong that can be corrected by doing something. Few others who posted had the same exact problem. With cable, it works just fine execpt the constand charging and unable to change settings. So, I'm sure it's just a glitch that can be corrected somehow.

Google and Bing searches reveal nothing. Just pure crap.

I guess my new batteries are DOA. Asked for a refund and got it without any problems. Seller didn't want them back. I guess he knew they were garbage.

Now, to find a reliable batter replacement. Any suggestions?

Screw it. I'm sending it to Sony for replacement. They still offer it as a free exchange. Should have done that in the first place. I thought that was over with, but apparently not.
