According to PS3 news the ps3 has now been cracked by george koltz (sorry if i spelt that wrong

this is what was posted on the site

To quote: "Hello hypervisor, I'm geohot

I have full read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor.

In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me.

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

Shout out to George Kharrat from http://www.iphonemod.com.br/ for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long :)

As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG.

A lot more to come..."

Is this not kind of hacking talk, which if you have read the AUP, you will know is not allowed...

I don't think so, he is only posting news that it has been done, not discussing how he could do it or asking for how to do it.

Well that's how I see it, I could be wrong so I'll wait for a mods opinion.

EDIT: I've actually looked at the PS3 news site and it seems focused on hacking and modding news so I guess this thread does break AUP.

I really don't see why this needs to be against the AUP. Why aren't we entitled to do anything we want with a console that is rightfully ours? I agree that modded systems should be banned from playing online (causes cheating and so forth), and sure, lots of modded systems are modded for the sake of playing burned/downloaded games. But for more modern systems, they're able to do a lot more. If one could unlock the full power of the PS3 and run a fully-usable Linux OS (shame we're just limited to that), it would be very appealing in my opinion.

But I'll stop there. Maybe a mod can explain exactly why this is off-limits.

Well, as far as I understand it, he has managed to crack one console, and it has yet to be replicated. I wouldn't call it 'cracked' until there's a mod that works on large scale and can't be detected and/or patched out.

He hacked the hypervisor, that's basically it. Without the decryption keys, he cannot run unsigned code as far as I know :O

Yep, he hasn't got full function of the software either, as for the codes he dosn't even know if there software or hardware based..........cool thing to do but prety useless at this point, and this is from one of the best hackers on the planet. Nice to see him complimenting the PS3 hardware achitecture though LOL...... I expect a patch war to ensue if he dose truley crak it plus games to be published on some of the newer exotic BR formats.

As four the AUP, the story is more about the fact this is the first time a hack has happened rather than forewarding info to board members regarding "how" to hack there PS3

I used to follow geohots twitter everyday to see if he did it but I stopped looking months ago. Glad to see he did something but this might not be good for the PS3 in the long run :/.

Hey, I know GeoHot.... I used his cracks to jailbreak my iPhone... Cool that he's working on the PS3 now too.. :)

Mostly because Jordan simply doesn't want discussion of hacking in any form on his website.

Use of the PS3 system software is conditional upon agreeing to Sony's terms as per the System Software License Agreement, so technically, although the PS3 is your own property, you are not at liberty to do anything you want with it - atleast when it comes tinkering with the firmware and software.

In any case, as far as this thread goes, I can't see it serving any useful purpose, even if it were within the bounds of the AUP.
