Hi,

I have a huge problem :(
My PS3 doesn't read the CD anymore... I hope the laser is not broken!

Has anybody had the same problem and knows how to fix it?

I have a 40GB-fat-boy (1st generation) and I hope i can fix it with one of these lens-cleaner-CD's...but i guess i have to buy a new one because i don't have anymore guarantee because it is too old.

Thank god PD released an update for the savegames otherwise I would have had to kill myself :indiff:

I have known 3 people out of the 6 people to have laser problems. This is a huge problem, especially with the 40 gig ps3's. What you can do if you know someone is get a bluray drive out of a different ps3 and throw it in yours, but you will have to save the board it's attached to. Plenty of tutorials out there, just remember to save your old stuff.

It could be bad news. Happened twice to me. First time, I had to replace the laser head and it started reading the disks again. Second time was when I popped in my copy of GT5 to install it for the first time. It installed it, updated and when restarting, it wouldn't read the disk again.

Well, long story short, dashed to the neaarset Best buy and bought a new PS3. Old one is sitting forlornly next to it on the floor now :(

First off, cd or dvd cleaner is not going to work, the Bluray lens has burned out.

You can fix this yourself, the question is, are you handy? If you are even mildly mechanically inclined it doesn't take more than an hour to fix.

If you are, PM me and I can show you where to buy a new laser pretty cheap.

Remember, all electronics run on smoke...once the smoke comes out it doesn't work anymore.:D

Exactly the same happened to my Phat, have ordered a new laser and will let you know how I get on installing it.

Just so you know, I could sometimes get GT to boot by constantly ejecting and resinserting the disc. Occasionaly only took a couple of tries, but when that became 20+ everytime then I knew something needed to happen.

Bought a new slim immediately, but am still fixing old one to use as a media centre on my main TV.

Are your PS3 having problems reading ONE particular CD, or is it ALL CD's ??

If it's just the one you prolly have a crack in the CD from the center and into the data area ... check that ...

All kind of CD/DVD/Blue-Rays...

But i bought one of those blue-ray-laser-cleaning-disc's for 20€ and my PS3 is reading it!

I hope this helps, I'll keep you updated, now it's cleaning it says :nervous:

EDIT: it worked !!!! wow, i hope this hold on :) problem solved, see you ingame :D :D :D

This happened to my old 60gig PS3. I had it repaired twice by Sony, and both times it eventually died again. The second time it died, it was out of warranty:(. Finally i just got an 80gig PS3:). BTW it'll cost $150 dollars for Sony to repair it, then you'll have a 3-month warranty.

For anyone who is interested, I replaced the laser myself at a cost of £40 for the part, a guide for identifying which one you will need, ebay have plenty once you know what your after, you can get just the laser, or the entire assembly which is what I did just for ease:

And a guide for actually doing it:

It wasn't that difficult, anyone familiar with assembling PC's would be able to do it. No solder, and other than the warranty seal being a Torx screw, everything just plain old phillips heads, some size 00 so make sure you got the tiny screwdrivers first.

Only advice I would give would be to label the screws as you take them out as there is a fair ton of them in all.

Obviously this isn't without risk, so don't blame me if you botch it and your house burns down.
