This question may have been asked before but i saw a video on joystiq playstation that showed a person running a fan test/clean on a 40 gb PS3 which is supposed to make it run quieter. Has anyone tried this because i would like to know whether it works or not thanks.

The point of that fan cycle is not to make the ps3 quieter. All it will do is help clean out dust in your ps3 by running some higher air pressure through it. Which should help it run cooler. From what I have read people have been 50/50 as to whether you should or shouldn't do it. Think the issue was that it isn't really that effective. I personally don't think there is a point.

yes my fan ps3 question is when hall play tv is coming out in australia ? I no it is out some overseas country but i would like to no when it is coming out.

DO NOT do it. The reason the system runs this so called "fan test" is because you're forcing it to freak out, making the fans go into overdrive to protect the system from catastrophic failure.

I took my PS3 outside and used the leaf blower. I used the stream of air indirectly to clear the cloud of cat hair and dust, and to avoid overreving the fans. My PS3 was slightly quieter afterwards in Folding@home.

How many fans are in the 40 GB non-BC model? I can only see a large blower through the grille.

edit: I see no harm in the fan test. The fans are running at maximum rated speed for a short period of time, producing maximum airflow with maximum noise. There's no harm in doing it every once in a blue moon. Ejecting the dust back into the room might not be a good idea though. One commenter suggested intentionally overheating the 60 GB model to get the fans to run at full tilt by inverting the PS3, but that is a silly suggestion.

I was under the impression that both methods get the same result, which is unnatural (for lack of a better word) for the PS3.

Thanks for everyone suggestions. Iwont do the fan test. I dont want to break it over a little noise!:)

Just clean your system normally, it does fine enough and is generally recommended.
