Well it happened, my launch day PS3 60GB finally pooped out with the flashing red light. I tried the basic steps online to try and resuscitate it, but no luck. And no GT5 save game backup - oops. Over a year of GT5 gameplay and I lost the lot :grumpy: I think I was up to level 35.

I'll probably start playing GT5 again at some point, but I think for the time being I'm off to play some new games on my new Slim. Maybe some Shift2.

PS3 broke is indeed a bugger, regarding having lost GT5 game data; i had it happen to me in January. Here are some useful tips as now i'm level 39 again with 590 cars in the garage.

1 Use a USB stick to save your data once in a while from now on.
2 If you bought the DLC cars they will still be available, just load them in the game again (download button in the begin screen).
3 Use the DLC racecars to do seasonals and build up the millions of credits with the 200% login bonus after a couple of days.
4 Systematically go through the new car dealership from brand to brand (so you don't forget any cars), and buy all the rides back you want with those millions.
5 Check the used car dealership after each 5 races (needs 5 to completely refresh itself), to buy the used ones you charish.

Hope this helps.

I feel your pain I lost mine after many years of faithful service had to replace it just glad I backed mine up.

Mods should make a Public service announcement sticky thread just reminding people to back up save files.. :p

Thats actually not a bad idea if its to help members it should be a sticky.

I back up after every trade and at the end of each day when I'm done playing. Even though its easy to level back up if you have the DLC content, I'd hate to have to go through all the licence tests again. 60 gold and all gold on special events except for Vettel challenges which are bronze for now. 98% game completion and I would really hate to have to get all that back. Especially all my cars. Backing up should be a priority. Matter of fact, when you buy a PS3, you should automatically buy a USB stick with it. Its a much needed accessory in my opinion.

Yours last for a long time. I have a 120GB Slim now (but i changed the HDD for a 250GB)
My old FAT 60GB died a couple of years ago and yes i know how it feels. (mine was a 1st day PS3 and i loved it)
You can save your DATA if you remove that HDD (from your PS3) and plug it into your PC with a SATA cable. Copy the SAVEDATA folder and then copy it again in a USB pendrive or key. Then after install the PS3 OS and the game you can copy that folder in the PS3 again.
Solved. ;)

ooh, ok, I was maybe incorrectly assuming that the hd from one PS3 could only be read on that same PS3... so I can copy off the save data to a PC, then to a flash drive and then copy to my new PS3? Not sure what you mean about the step of installing the PS3 OS.. do you mean put the old drive in my new PS3?

There should be a regular reminder for people to back up their saved games, assuming they're not paying for PSN plus.

The crazy thing is it was 'national backup day' the day before my fat died, and having spent plenty of time making sure I have my pcs backed up, for whatever reason I never thought of backing up my saved games... :grumpy:

That sucks. I had a scare and though all worked out, immediately got into the habit of saving data.

I really wish there was a way to save the data to a usb though from WITHIN the game. It would certainly make it much easier and people would likely do it much more often.

Can anyone confirm that you can copy data from a ps3's drive by connecting it to a PC? I've read elsewhere that the drive is encrypted and can only be read by the ps3 that the drive originally came from?

What steps did you try to fix it?? I only ask because i've brought mine back to life 3 times already and it's worked every time.. Just not for long..

I'm pretty sure that's true, it's why it reformats it if you put in another hdd into it. I have no clue if a computer will read it though..

No no...when you buy a new PS3 and you start it for the very first time you need to install the OS (XMB) and upgrade it to the last version...this is automatic when you start it. Then you need to install GT5 for the first time and update it to the latest version.

AND THEN:

Then you need to import the SAVEDATA folder (copy the SAVEDATA folder that you had to copy earlier from the old PS3 HDD to your PC and put in your new HDD)

Advice!!!:Don´t use the old HDD in the new PS3 because when you try to start that HDD in the new PS3 it will delete or format the HDD to install the OS. (XMB)

Understood?

AND i must add. The PS3 HDD (hard disk drive) is a normal notebook/PC HDD and you can even use it in a normal PC. It is not at 7200rpm (it is a 5400rpm) but works the same (it is slower but nothing more) and you can plug it with a SATA cable...just check how your HDD is installed in your PC before plug it in yours if you don´t have a clue in what are you doing... lol...

I used my old 60GB to test some OS´s in my PC, Windows, Linux, etc.

Got it, I've got plenty of old drives from various PCs and laptops in external drive enclosures, so I understand that part. I'm still curious whether you managed to read data from a PS3's hd by connecting it to a PC, because everywhere else I've read (see long post here) says the drive is encrypted and that it can't be read by any other device other than the PS3 it original came from?

Just try and see what happens. You can read the whole internet but if you don´t see it for yourself you will never know. You won´t loose anything just for plug the HDD and see if you can read the data. I could when i changed my 120GB for my new 250GB HDD.

You know, with how easy is to get credits now I think you'll find it to be a lot of fun to start the game again. This happened to me too a couple of months ago.

No please. Don't torture yourself like that D: Play Dirt instead, or Forza, but not Shift...

Take it apart, heat up the chips, re-apply new thermal paste. Should be fixed.

My launch fat 80g has been brought back and works fine.

And you can't do anything with the hard drive. It's coded so only the ps3 that wrote it can read it. The info is useless.

my ps2 acted up a lot and superstitions developed from it, like turning it off and back on multiple times or stroking the top of it will help it unfreeze. :odd:

then I took technology class and everything changed. but even today I still have those habits...

Really - what program did you use to decode the encrypted HD on your PC and copy the existing PS3 data to a new drive - all from the PC????????? You are not telling the truth and you're wasting the OP's time..... this is mis-information and you are spreading it. Don't speak like you KNOW this will work because it won't. How about YOU take the time to TEST this BEFORE you tell someone to jump through hoops and give false hopes up because you obviously have not looked into this.

And YES - when my PS3 died I plugged in into my PC and tried to read it period - no go, no recognizing the drive until formatted. It is not formatted in a file system any OS other than the PS3 that formatted the drive initially can recognize. The PS3 encodes the drive with a key that only THAT PS3 has; nothing else can read it. And P.S. I kinda work in software dev for a living.

To the OP:
You are right, the HD is encrypted to the PS3 and cannot be read in another PS3 or PC for that matter until it is formatted. Yes, the HD could be used on a PC - but not until it is formatted = lost data no matter what unless you resurrect your old PS3 and can copy the save off. Sorry bro, you lost your game.

Does anyone to redownload my stealth cars on a new slim? Cos my old phat 60gb launch model got the YLOD :(

To OP: The only way to recover your game data is to find a way to revive your old ps3 for at least some time, so that you can back up through a USB drive. Because the only the ps3 from where the hard drive came from can read it

This is a simple, quick fix to recover your stuff if you don't want to go to pay a shop to fix your ps3 for you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUaCoimoKTk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Cool story bro

It happened to me for the fifth time already :)
I fixed it a couple times and had someone fix it for me the last time because it's time consuming.

Go on Craigslist and find someone to fix it for you. It'll set you back $40-ish. You get to retain all your data too so...yay.

Would there be people willing to pay for old ps3s?

I have a 40 gb just needs a new blueray drive.
