PS3 HD Full - with only GT 5 installed!!!

Hey there,

Hoping someone can help me to understand what's happening with my PS3. It's not a strictly GT5 related problem but that's what highlighted the issue for me.

I have an older model, fatboy PS3 with a 40GB hard disk. When I first installed GT5, I had to delete everything off my HDD as it said I had no free space.

After going through that process of removing almost every DL game and most of my old save games, the system still said that I had only 8gb free. :dunce:

This was enough to install GT5 but nothing else can now exist on my PS3, For some reason, Patch 1.05 seems to have installed fine - even though apparently I don't have enough space free! :dunce: 💡 :dunce:

Are there are programs available on the network to clear out the rubbish that must be lurking on my platters?

Just change the HDD to a bigger one.
If you have the older version of the PS· "fat" it is very easy to change your HDD.
 
40gb in real money is around 36gb, you will have firmware updates on there another 3gb and operating system claims more another 6 or 7gb. 10gb for gt5 initial install, 3gb or so for the install on the fly. These updates another 3 or 4gb, all this adds upto the fact you need a bigger hard drive. But at least you can back up you save now!

Its a easy to do as well, just use a decent screwdriver set.
 
You must have other stuff on there somewhere... updates or media files or something...

I would probably suggest backing up your saves, then formatting the drive and starting from scratch... you should have well over 30GB free of a 40GB unless the drive has massive bad sectors or something.
 
My 2001 PC had a bigger hard drive then this,just upgrade the hd!They a dirt cheap these days.
 
For those in the uk maplins 2.5" 500Gb sata drive for £55 at the moment

I am not having any issues with my 40gig HD....

I have prologue / GT5 and Grand Theft Auto 4 installed/

Still have 9.66gigs leftover.

You must have files on there somewhere taking up space.
 
Does anyone know a good guide for transfering all the data to a new drive and installing it? I too have the old fat PS3, im a little worried i may end up in the same boat!
 
You must have videos, music, photos or other installed games. It really is that simple. Probably.
 
You're having a defrag problem. Like me and my 80gig, said I had 20gigs but I really had about 40gb. I will explain. I noticed the same problem, then my hdd would start to get stuck when I try to export photos to the XMB, or save pics from the web browser. I think the problem starts because of continously deleting and downloading content until near full. So, one day I booted it up. Then instead of going to the XMB, It said a hdd error occured, then went to a screen to initiate a 'Hard disk rebuild', which is a defrag. It worked fine after, but I didnt trust it, did a hdd backup. Bought a 500gb. And restored the backed up data. You should do the same. Incase your hdd dies. And check Youtube for a great guides for changing hdd in a phat ps3. CNET have a great one, just have the right size screwdriver. The screws are in tight and easy to strip.

I don't know what kind of filesystem the PS3 OS uses but not all file systems need defragmenting.

I recently did a HDD upgrade. The incoming GT5 and it's big install was the last straw. It's worth doing if you can get yourself a replacement HDD. I swapped my 60GB for a 250GB.

One thing of note. When I put in the 250GB HDD (and before I restored the backup data), the PS3 OS initialises the disk. A LOT of space gets munched up by the PS3 OS. I can't recall exact figures but it was approx like so:

HDD 250GB
Reported max size by PS3 237GB
Remaining space after first initialisation (nothing extra installed) 219 GB

All the updates add up to just under 1G actually
 
Are you sure there's nothing else on there? No demos? Do you own other games? Sometimes they'll install without really informing you so check the Game Data folder and see what's there.

Its the 500 gb drives at £45 at dabs.com. Im thinking that was a typo mate?

Nothing. It was a brand new HDD. Unboxed it, put it in the PS3 and turned the PS3 on. This was before I restored my backup image from the old HDD. The PS3 decided to allocate near 20GB GB for itself.

The file system is fat32 anything ntfs will not work

I'm in a similar situation too. My 40gig PS3 just isn't big enough for GT5 anymore.

To fit the latest patch on i've had to delete all my downloaded demos, there wasn't that many to start with, all my game save data from games i no longer have, apps like PS Home, Mubi, Video Zone etc and any of the data that gets downloaded from Blu-ray films. I even had to archive off onto a external HDD all my photos and movies from my digital camera.

My PS3 is now running close to its limit yet now has virtually nothing on it. It's time to buy a new HDD.
 
I had the same problem and swapped my 40g HDD for a 250g one - cost 30 euros - less than half the price of GT5

when you deleted your HDD did you remove game data as well as saved games. On mine there were quite a few installs of games and then the subsequent game data updates. I have a 40gig fatty and since my recent system failure had to format the drive and recover the PS3 system. With only GT5 installed and its updates / save games my system has about 12gb used!
 
You've probably just deleted "save data" rather than "game data". Game data is in the folder above (?) save data. There should be gigabytes of stuff you can delete there. Otherwise just upgrade the hard disk. Instructions are found in the PS3 manual. The only tool you need is a small phillips screwdriver.
 
Check the Game Data folder on your XMB. Installed games should be there, don't bother with deleting saved games ever, really, as they rarely take any substantial amount of space. If you've played Uncharted 2, for example, there should be a decent sized file in the Game Data folder you can delete. Same with Ratchet and Clank A Crack in Time, or Oblivion, etc etc. Lots of games are installed to the harddisk.
 
What? I have a 40GB model with many games installed... uninstalled prologue and Infamous as well as some games I hired and there was 12GB free (that's still with 5 other games installed!). 12GB is enough for GT5 and whatever updates...

I'm gonna quote this to make sure it get's heard.
I've seen many people wondering why they're out of space when they've "deleted everything." Make sure to go to the "Game Data Utility" folder, not the "Save Data Utility" folder. (It's the one at the top)

If you're still having trouble, then maybe get rid of videos and music.

An HDD upgrade isn't a bad idea anyway. I have one of the old 20GB Fattys (which a lot of people don't even know exist for some reason) I upgraded to a 160 a few years ago and will likely upgrade again later.
 
I noticed my old, now dead ps3 had less and less HDD space over time

About 2 months before it died(YLOD) I deleted most of the things to clean it up. I had 2 games taking up about 8 gig and 4 gig worth of music. It was telling me I had 2 gig left. When i got the replacement it had 30gig left after ps3 updates.
