PS3 HDD just made the Chirp of Doom

While attempting the Le Mans B spec I heard it do it 2 times.

I heard it yesterday but i thought it was the HDD going to sleep mode since i wasn't doing anything at the time.

I am backing up at the moment.

But will like some insight on a new HDD

I will go with Western Digital.

But should I get a 5400RPM or 7200RPM.

I could get away with an SSD if I had the money since it will just have GT5, Wipeout HD and a few PS1 games.

Tomorrow will be the day of the Format, the chkdsk and S.M.A.R.T data log checking and countless S.M.A.R.T tests.
 
I put in a 5400rpm 500gb Samsung in mine just recently. But i remember seeing a thread somewhere on the internet about boot up times/normal game load times between different hard drives. There were decreased time on certain features, and on some games. Depending on how you use your ps3 it might not warrant enough to buy a more expensive SSD over a normal HDD with more memory. I will try to find it again and link it.

Well I don't have money for an SSD, so I may have to go with a 750GB 72000RPM one like I was planning.

So far

S.M.A.R.T logs show nothing wrong.
 
One thing to note is that the PS3 uses SATAII and not III, so you can save some money there.
 
Yeah I know it uses SATA II

All tests passed buy I will still get a new one just in case.

Firmware reinstall time.
 
Wait whats this chirp noise my (FAT) ps3 made a strangest noice today like a electro wistle kind of sound , also GT5 has crashed twice in the last few day's.

Is it wise for me to format now before it packs up .

(EDIT) My PS3 is 80GB and its full to the max with dlc ps store games.

Does the PS3 slim make the chirp of doom. I have a new (1 month) 320GB PS3 slim and I have been hearing a lot of strange noises.
 
The noise is a random high pitched chirp.

I also have a slim 320GB.

Some noises are normal like ticking, creaking and pops when you turn it off as this is just all the internals cooling off and returning to their normal size.
 
I don't know if mine are the Disc spinning but it sounds like chugging sound. Like a belt spinning then abruptly coming to a stop.

I've only had it for a month :banghead: and I just replaced my yloded fat :grumpy:
 
Record the sound.

I as well as other members can tell you if it is normal or not.
 
I upgraded the drive in my 40GB fat PS3 about a year ago with a 320GB 7200RPM drive with some caching features (can't for the life of me remember what they are all about).

Load times for some things dropped a little and the extra heat output (if there is any - I remember reading a lot about it before I committed to a purchase) doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Currently thinking about replacing the drive with a SSD because of the woes of Skyrim. Ebuyer seem to have some good offers on at the moment, but really, I'm loathe to buy a drive just for Skyrim. Why oh why didn't I trust my instincts and buy it for my PC? My trusty old Q6600 G0 and GTS450 OCII would have eaten the shoddy effort for breakfast.
