Hello all. I’m not sure where this would go, but I figured I’d try here.

I want to upgrade my slim PS3 hard drive from its stock 250 GB drive to a (preferably) 1 TB drive. What I do know:

- must be 2.5” internal laptop drive
- 5400 RPM (7200 works, but extra heat is never good)
- must reinstall firmware

What I’m inquiring about is drive brands. I’ve heard Western Digital and Seagate brand drives are considered to be the better ones in the market. Some sample drives I found:

These drives can work just fine, right? What kind of drives do you have installed?

Western Digital, I'll never buy a Seagate drive again (unless something goes really wrong for WD and really right for Seagate).

Compare the spec sheets for the WD Blue (5,400rpm) and Black (7,200rpm). You can see the Black needs an extra 100mA, dissipates less than half a watt more, is a bit louder (remembering that dB is a logarithmic scale) and has a 5 year warranty vs. the Blue's 2 years which should speak to its reliability. Noise and cost are the only valid reasons to opt for the Blue instead of the Black because otherwise the pros massively outweigh the cons. I mean, I suppose when you're talking about 1.8W vs 1.4W the difference looks significant, but in absolute terms it just isn't.

I agree, any issues I have ever had with HDD's have usually been Seagate ones. I have a WD Blue in my PS3, it has been very reliable. You won't see that much of a performance boost with 7200 over 5400 so just stick with that. Toshiba is also pretty good (recently put a L200 1TB one in my laptop) and they even sell them with the tagline 'for game consoles'.

To make things easy you can backup the entire PS3 system to an external HDD and then reload it on to the new one so everything will be the same as you left it.
