PS3 Issues.....

Anyone else had issues out of their ps3 shutting down randomly them flashing a red light? It doesnt try to speed the fans up before doing this action so it kinda rules out overheating. And its never a set amount of time before it does it. Any help would be appriciated. FYI its an 80gig ps3 purchased back in december and gets very very light play less than 10 hours.... Also it seems that the issue didnt start untill after 2.40. i have now upgraded to 2.41 and im still having the same issues.

have you tried it on its side? to see if it still cuts off
i know you probley have but check all the vents are clear
you could try putting a vacum cleaner over the vents to clean any dust out
if not try moving it a bit

if that doesnt fix it your best bet would be to call sony helpline and explain your problem

To be honest, it sound exactly like overheating. The fact the fans dont speed up just means that the thermistor that contolls the speed of the fans relative to the temp of the console doesn't seem to be working, hence the overheating.

After a quick google search, the only way to fix this and guarantee it doesn't come back is by calling Sony.

Are the fans running at all? can you hear any sound or feel any airflow movement because it may have been due to the fan failing. I remember a member a while back who bought an 80GB which had the same red light issue. It turned out that the fan was faulty and never spun up (eventhough it was brand new) so after a few mins the PS3 would overheat.

It might just be a coincidence that this issue has appeared around the time of the 2.40 update. It could have contributed but the update mainly effected XMB functionality and probably did not or can not make any changes to hardware control.

I suggest you try cleaning it out, as smokey suggested, failing that I think your going to have to call Sony.

The system is still very clean. I also tried to vacuum the system out with. I did the fan test that is not suggested just to see if the fan controller was even working all the fans came on and went thru the test properly. My main issue is that it wont always duplicate the results of the error. Its hit and miss... I can feel it moving air but not very much and like i say the fan speeds never increase under normal conditions. While upgrading to version 2.41 the system shut of 4-5 times and some how didnt brick itself. Wondering if the fans were the issue i purchased a niko intercooler just for testing the system has not crashed with this on it once. Also using a digital temp gun my maximum output temps for the rear vents are around 124-125 degrees just before it shuts down... I have tried the system in the laying down postion and standing up in the cabinet and out of the cabinet and any location it will crash unless the intercooler is on it. I have also wondered if there is just an error with the hard drive in some way but once the firmware was upgraded it seems that i would have fixed the problem. I have made a call to sony and they are ready to send the box for the return and issue a replacement.

... are around 124-125 degrees just before it shuts down...

Degrees what? Celsius or Fahrenheit???

If its Celsius, then it 110% overheating! That will be a fail safe which is making it turn off. All modern CPU's have them to prevent permanent damage.

If its Fahrenheit then thats only 52 degrees Celsius, which is nothing really. Most desktop PC CPU's can run at up to 100 Celsius before the fail safe kicks in. With laptop CPU's the fail safe is about 125 Celsius.

To me it seems like the thermistor which controlls fan speed is a bit off, hence why the fans are running, but not enough to keep it cool, and also hence why the Niko intercooler prevents it from freezing.

been playing gran turismo for some time today with no issues and no intercooler... i did the old vacuum treatment to it last night and things seem to have improved. FYI that was Degrees Fahernheit

I got all the updates, from 2.40, which made my PS3 crash and i had to delete all my pictures and downloaded games, thankfully they were kinda saved in the PS Store. I had to get all the achievments again, but at least i still had it. 2.41 really didnt do anything to my PS3. But I have a huge question, i couldnt really find a thread for this, so here goes. My controller will not charge. When i put it in my comp, it says that the device is not recognized, or that it has some problem with it. My PS3 refuses to charge it, I dont know why. Can some help me please?

i even have a charger, that plugs into the wall, thats not helping, it doesn't even charge it there.

If it won't charge when it's plugged directly into the wall, I suspect that there is a problem with the controller itself that is totally unrelated to the system updates.
