PS3 making noise

For the last few months now my PS3 starts making a loud (and sometimes louder) whirring sound, especially when doing online racing, but now almost all the time after using it for any amount of time. Exiting the race does not make it stop, only shutting down the whole system, but then it begins again almost as soon as I turn it back on and start racing again. I tried clearing out all my old replays but that didn't accomplish anything.
Any theories as to why or what I can do to stop it?
 
Probably a play in one of the cooling fan axles.

Mine makes a sound like that from times to times, especially after being on for a long time, or when there is alot of processing. (graphics card or processor gets hot, and the fan goes to its faster speed).

I just give it (the PS3) a gentle, but firm punch, sometimes you need to punch it several times before it goes quiet.
This however does not fix the problem, it will eventually come back, and over time get worse and worse.
That said, its over 3 years since mine started doing this, and its still not that big of an issue.

First thing you should do though, is grabbing your vaccum cleaner and vaccum out all the accumulated dust in the console, dust is the enemy of the cooling system, and if you're unlucky, it can short-circuit several components in the system aswell. Get it out and it should suffice with the lower speed on the cooling fan, hence reducing the risk of it starting to make that sound.
If you have the knowledge, open it up and dust it off with a soft brush (dont use the vaccum cleaner inside the console, the EMP from it can burn the motherboard circuits if you are not carefull).

I read some advice on GTP once that said to make sure you use a long attachment & don't put the vacuum cleaner right up to the PS3.
The reason given was something to do with static.

Yeah, EMP, as in "Electro Magnetic Pulse", or, to put it simply, static electricity, sorry for any confusion.
Although, as I said, as long as you dont open it up or anything, you should be fine.
 
BTW, just vacuuming all the ventilation ports really did the trick. It's nice and silent now. That thing is a real dust magnet, very clogged!

my fat ps3 isnt a dust magnet, only my pc cases are (since they have good airflow), have you never cleaned it in its lifetime?

sucking doesnt work as well as blowing, some compressed air into the ps3 (or anything) will clean it up much better even though it gets messy in your room (maybe vacuum around after spraying in)
 
I clean my ps3 every week.
 
1)Turn of the power on your PS3 using the switch on the back.
2)Turn the power back on using the switch and at the same time press and hold power and eject button.

this will make your PS3 blow through its vents and sneeze out dust and dirt with the least effort from your side.
