My What?
This just happened today. I turned on my PS3(about 2 and a half years old and its a "fatty") and it worked perfectly fine, so after I was finished with it, I turned it off. I came back later to play it again and it started up, and I heard the usual start up music, but this time I could only see a green background with wavy lines, I couldn't even get to the screen to let me select a profile... and only the green light was on, not the blue light.. so I restarted it and the same thing happened.. I did this a few more times and eventually just unplugged the entire system and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then I plugged it back in and I get nothing, just a black screen.. so I turned off my PS3 once again and this time I held down the start up button for awhile so I could get to this screen:

which worked, so then I put my USB stick with PS3 update 3.60 on it into my PS3 and tried to update.. that was working well and updating, so I decided to leave the room while it was updating and I came back and the PS3 was running, but the blank black screen had returned and only the green light was on again... I've heard you can restore the system, but that deletes everything from the PS3, so i'd rather not do that.. . Any help would be GREATLY appreciated on what I can do..:scared: Thanks

Seems like a vital system file was corrupted. Choose option 3. It should restore a bad file. It won't delete any user files. It only replaces the system files.

Thanks, I tried it and it and I was "doing its thing" then a screen came up telling me the hard drive(or disc) was corrupted and I was promomted to press enter.. I turned off the PS3 just in case.. should I have kept going?

Yes. The PS3 just restarted itself so it would not have problems replacing files. It will just reinstall system files and won't touch any files you put on the PS3.

I gone through the same problem when my brother switched off the PS3 with the power switch in the back.

It just finished and it prompted me to do the same thing again.. is that normal? or did I do something wrong?

EDIT: and again

If not I'd try #4. It will only delete messages if anything. Won't delete any of your files.

I went to try #4 and a message comes up saying my hard disk can't be accessed. Is my hard drive/disk possibly loose?

It could be. Try taking it out and put it back. Tell me the results when you try #4 again.

Tried that and I still got the same message.. I even tried #3 again and the same thing happened like before..

I would contact Sony at this point and you should link them to this thread before you select #5. I'm sorry but I don't anything else at this point.

I already did, it looks like I might just have to try option 5, luckily I just backed up GT5 the other day.. Thanks for all your help though! 👍 I'm open to any last minute ideas though before I go ahead and do it..

#2 just restores settings like video settings and all other settings(also brings user setting to defaults). #5 is the same thing but it deletes all of the data. So you can try #2 and see if it works before going out and deleting all of the data..
