OK - so some might not regard this as a "GT5 specific" thread - but it is for me.

Pre GT5 my PS3 was used as a standalone unit - except for PS Store and official software updates.

GT5 is the first game that has brought my PS3 into online gaming - so gaming, messaging and swapping files over the net with the PS3 and also logging in to the GT homepage using the PC / phone.

In "PC land" I would be worried about internet security, viruses, trojans etc...

... is there any need to have similar concerns in the GT5 / PS3 arena?

Or is the PS3 pretty locked down?

Not unless your surfing around punching in your social, bank info, cc #'s into questionable websites, the ps3 secure.

The PS3 will only run digitally signed software, which is what stops piracy and homebrew apps. The only way I can see you leaving one vulnerable is through a Jailbreak that would allow none signed apps to run. At which point it would be just as vulnerable as a PC if malware writers decided to target it.

But other than getting your PSN sign in there is little to gain for them. When most PS3's are on they are playing games, so they can't run botnet software in the background and I doubt enough people do online banking on their PS3.

Any HDD, SSD or PC derivative system connected to the internet is vulnerable, up to and including Internet accessible Cell-phones.

We are for the most part, as far as Cell-phones & Game consoles, in the hands of Our Service Provider to ensure that the Servers, Routers & Firewall Equipment are secured with regular maintenance and updates.

I recommend to read the aup from PSN! And yes, you should be worried. The PS3 is a spy console. Everything you do is saved by sony.
But I believe you are more worried about virus than data privacy. Only thing that could happen is that your account is hijacked and your creditcard is used. So be careful with this.
