So I was watching SALT last night and my PS3 froze up in the middle of it(40gb old model).. so I had to reset it the hard way (rear switch) and when I booted it back up it no longer reads any discs, blu ray dvd cd etc.. I've Googled around and found that I either have to ship it to sony or attempt to fix it myself, my technical expertise isnt very high, not sure I'd trust myself to take the thing apart and fix it without a problem.

So I was wondering if anybody has shipped theirs to Sony.. is it worth the service fee versus buying a new slim model. Do they actually fix the thing, or send you a new one? I swapped out my 160gb hd for the original 40gb so I wouldn't have to back up anything but I have a pretty sick KZ2 vinyl cover on it, will that be gone? :\

Any help is appreciated.

(Yes I searched, and the one thread that came up didnt help)

it seems like you bluray drive has failed. sending it to sony would not be my first option. i would look around locally to see if you can get the BR drive replaced or buy a ps3 slim. i say this because there is a big chance sony will just send you a refurbished model rather than replacing the BR drive. goodluck

This recently happened to a friend of mine at school, he sent it to sony and the price they offered him to fix it was close to the same price as a PS3 slim, with more memory.

You're lucky though, if you plug in a flash-device (USB) you can back up all your saves on the PS3 and then copy them onto the new one.

It's your choice on what to do, but New it always better then Fixed.
