So I finally stopped being a cheap ass and purchased myself a PVR lol. When I was researching which one to get I read PS3 will NOT record through HDMI on any of them and the new Elgato HD 60 or whatever it's called will not record PS3 at because of this. Pretty disappointing. I recorded one video so far with the component cables (supplied with PVR) and it turned out ok, but not great in terms of quality. I have read you can buy a HDMI splitter to record in 1080p with HDMI, but would like to know if anyone here already records with one? Or if you can point me in the direction of someone who does for sure record with HDMI on PS3. Most videos I have seen online the people do not use HDMI or they don't list if they do so I can't be 100% accurate.

Another question is does YouTube downgrade the quality of videos uploaded to it? Mine looks pretty much the same on YouTube compared to the raw file, but I'd still like to know for future.

EDIT: One huge question I have is how/can you turn off music during replays? I have the music playing over the replay from the game and have been screwed from copyright before from this.

Here is the video I recorded so far with my PVR as a quick test.

Get comfy this may take a while lol...

I have Elgato hd but can't remember which model (not at home). Anyway my model works fine with ps3, maybe the new improved model doesn't in which case Elgato have been silly IMO.

My ps3 vids are done through the composite at 1080p. I'm sure that the splitter would improve quality compared to this but I don't think my vids look too bad this way. Can't say the same for my driving lol.

YT definitely compresses the bit rates a lot from the original file. I think it reduces the video quality as well but it's hard to be certain how much (I'm not knowledgeable on the technical aspects).

Totally know what you mean re music on replays. Go to settings in the top right menu in gt6. Go down to sound and you can turn down music on replays to 0 which turns off the music. I also switched off the HUD part which displays the music somewhere in those settings (long time ago can't remember where sorry).

One other tip, somewhere on the ps3 XMB in settings there is a setting to switch psn online/offline notifications. If you don't want lots of notifications saying jimbob online jimbob offline on your videos switch them off ;)

Hope that helps!

I have the Hauppauge pvr gaming with component cables.
It records in 1080p but i only record in 720p ( my ps3 settings switched to 720p).
But i compress the video's, because of my internet upload is not that high.
Important is that the video is 30fps (or 60fps?? youtube should support 60fps now?)
I first recorded in pal 25fps, youtube converted and the quality sucked and it took very very long before the proper video was viewable (first 20 minutes only 360P was released).

you have to try it yourself.
If the video is 30fps recorded in proper quality upload raw footage in private(so it is not public and olny you can access) mode and see for yourself, after youtube has processed the video.
My recordings i'm doing in 11mbps, hauppauge original Bitrate settings were 8mbps, but i got better footage with 11mbps after compressing.

The sound is easy in GT6, options, sound and set all music sound OFF
My only sound is the action sound in the menu's and the engine sounds in the game.
For youtube i set all sound 0%, menu/replay/setting/gameplay.
I have three accounts on my ps3, 2 without sound and one for fun with sound.
i post a screenshot later.

The worst recordings i get from "rome" track, or tracks with lots of tree's like "trial mountain", you need less compression on those clips.
so don't think when the recording from ascari or willowsprings is great, you get the same quality with these settings in "rome" or "trial mountain".That's why i switched to 11mbps Bitrate recordings

Again, i compress before upload, so my clips are not great on youtube..

The one person i think would know best is GranTurismoOink.
I watched some vids of his now and still can't tell which he uses.

Great tips for recording, thanks! People signing in and out is so annoying. I had a video where someone signed in, but I just put an annotation over it saying subscribe lol. The new Elgato doesn't have any other spots except HDMI so if your device doesn't have an HDMI you can't record with it. The old one can do both, but max of 30 frams while new one is 60. Right now it will be a problem, but in the future all new things will only be HDMI so it won't matter. PS4 only has HDMI outputs for example.

Youtube just last week I think it was lets you do 60fps. Before that was only 30. You have to make sure your video is a full 60 however or youtube will lower it. Most record in 59. something which youtube detects as 30fps. Must make sure your editing software is set for 60 so when you save the file for upload. No point in recording at 60fps and getting a larger files just to upload it at 30fps.

my recording in the video to me looks alright, but I have heard component recordings are a low end HD recording while HDMI is a much crisper shot. The vid posted has lots of darks and lights which seemed to over expose and under expose shots which is still viewable, but not as smooth as I'd like.

Correct me when i'm wrong, but the PS4 HDMI limit is gone with one of the latest firmware updates.
I can't confirm because i don't have the PS4, but my PVR should be able to record hdmi on a PS4 now.

Ps3 still has that limit, so you need a hdmi box that removes that limit or use the component cables..
i write hdmi limit, because i can't remember the english word for that restriction right now. ;)

Yes they recently got rid of it. PS3 I hear is built in so they can't just do an update for it to be gone. They made it to stop people recording blueray movies, netflix, etc but obviously that didn't work at all and has only hurt them since all PS3 videos look much worse than Xbox 360 vids on YouTube.

Also I checked out some of your videos. Quality seems pretty much the same as mine. Compression on yours doesn't seem to have that much quality loss on them. In your latest video you used my tune for the drift seasonal? You said you got more points than me, but actually got less?

What? as far as i know, i got more points then in my last keicar drift.
Your drift had over 5000 points, Wait i fix that right now.
@shmogt I see what i did there.:dunce:

Fixed, i meant more points then my last keicar drift.;)
Not more points then your drift..( almost did it again, my english grammar is sometimes way off( more often then sometimes:banghead:))

I've been on youtube for a long time. I can tell you that the good quality on youtube which I had a year ago isn't anymore as good as it was before. I've been using the same settings for over a year now and can tell you that youtube has started to accelerate the compression to make the video available faster for the public.

For the PS3 I use a HDMI splitter which bypasses the HDCP protection and record with Elgato.

My videos seem about the same on of off YouTube. I just bought a splitter and now record in actual 1080. This video is from HDMI and the top of the page one is component cable. They don't looks crazy different honestly, but works much better for me since HDMI is a lot louder and better signal when watching it on the tv.
