PS3 stopped reading BD

ok both of you are very smart and seem to know your stuff!

Funny thing is i read this read the day the OP posted it, and same thing happened to my PS3 the day after! But it's strange. You see it wouldnt load DIRT but i was heading to a break at my sisters house for a few days so i thought nothing of it, just thought the game was faulty. But then i remembered this thread while i was away! As soon as i got home yesterday i turned on my PS3 and it worked....for 3 hours! So it now just has the timer in the top right whenever i tried to load a disc. However i spoke to Sony and my new console arrives on Tuesday 15th to swapped with my faulty one. Now i will be purchasing the continous play warranty.

The thing that bothers me is, it's great that they will happily replace it now, but is the machine they are replacing it with going to break as well? Will it be made differently to actually last as long as it should, (whether it's the laser at fault or any other component)? Or will it go as well in 6 months?!(Yes i only got mine in NOV07). It's worrying.

Lol, Im with the same question in my head now, what if the new one breaks too...

I asked for a new one because of the 2, 3 months waiting lists here in Belgium. I think we should hope the lists grow tinner eventually so maybe if it happens again we could let him fix and have it back on time...

And Robin and H3rman, man you guys, go pm eachother or call eachother, maybe make an appointment with eachother. Go to Sony together and ask to them who is wright... But please...

he's right you guys. take your arguments elsewhere. back on topic, did this problem only occur on the european models ? i'm hoping this won't happen to mine. i'm from canada, and yes i know you guys said the cost cutting happened after the EU launch, but just because of that reason does not mean it wont happen to me.

*crosses fingers*

I think it is pretty disgusting that this even happens on a 300+ pound machine, it is disgraceful, before or after money saving measures. Even if it doesnt happen again with the new machine they send me, that doesnt justify it happening the first time.

Which PS3 is this happening to?

I've had my 60GB PS3 since January 07 and its been working like a clock

Are you expecting a 0% failure rate for the PS3?

Lets be honest that is totally unrealistic, the PS3 has now shifted over a million units in the UK alone and its said to have a failure rate of around 1% (low for consumer electronics with the average around 3%), which means that around 10,000 of those will fail for one reason or another.

Sorry but its certainly not disgraceful at all, its unfortunate for those it happens to, but its also simply the way things go.

Hell if you think that a 1% fall out rate on a £300 product is disgraceful all I can say is don't ever buy a new car.

100% agree and was just away to write something similar!

+1

Interesting how sometimes consumers can have greatly unreasonable expectations for a product/thing.

fair point i suppose i was quite angry when i wrote that, ill just see how this new one goes, but the old one breaking just killed most of my faith so i am just expecting this one to go wrong all the time.

if it does how unlucky would that make me going by your percentages?

speedthrill: Where did you get your PS3 from? Just curious about how you argued your point as in my experience Belgian firms are not the nest at handling customer complaints :-)

I got mine at Fnac last summer and it's been working without fault, but you never know!

I've also found it fairly tolerant of scratched and marked discs.

Fantastic and wonderful!!!!!!!!! This post honestly put a smile on my face and even a audible chuckle!
I worked in some sony centres for 8.5 years adn the failure rate of 1% is actually very good. Sony released a video a few years back and about 50% came back as the factory where they were made had put a capacitor in the wrong way round.
Anything with a laser or a HDD in it is at the higher end of the failure rate chart. making everything solid state would reduce it but solid state i dont think is quite so resistant to data corruption. see it can all go wrong regardless of what you end up with.
