I am considering getting one but I want some input regarding the system itself. Is there any problems that I have to be aware of? Will it be wise to get one now or wait until later until some issues are resolved? I know that to play online you need a Plus subscription or something like that right? I also heard that the controllers don't last long. Has this issue been corrected yet?

I have had a PS4 since release and havent had any issues. Controller has held up well and I actually prefer it over last gens design.

I say the only thing holding the PS4, imo is the games. Of course that is debatable but if you want one now, you should be fine.

Indeed, after more than a year any launch problems have definitely been resolved. In truth, the only one I was aware of was the share function not always saving the current fifteen minutes of gameplay...but that's fixed.

PS+ isn't needed for F2P games, only regular games, and then only for online play.

The controllers's thumb sticks do sometimes wear fast (consider getting grips of that happens) but either than that, no problems at all.

Actually, all apps, games or otherwise, may or may not require the PS+ paywall. It is usually decided on a case by case basis.

On topic though, I have a small complaint about the battery life in the controllers, but nothing major.

Same here. I got a PS4 about 10 days ago, and the short battery life of the controller kinda supprised me. But I guess that's because of the light bar and the speaker they added to the controller.

The only other let-down for me is the fact that I can't stream vids from my desktop to the PS4 locally as one could with the PS3. I know, you can still stream vids to the PS4 with Plex-server, but you gotta go over the internet. So for that reason I kept the PS3 running.

For the rest it's all good!

Yeah only problem I have to report is the thumb stick rubber wearing fast. Sony will replace then as long as they are within warranty.

Thanks for all the responses. One last question: is the 500gb model the only one and should I consider a larger hd or no? I've read that the current games require a large install space.

I don't play any video games. My passion are the racing Sims where, obviously, granturismo is included and racing is all I do in the virtual world.
So, with this huge problem Sony decided to create with the racing wheel manufactures and since I don't want to throw my brand new Logitech G27 in the garbage, the 3 was probably the last PlayStation I bought. From now on I'm shifting to PC where I can race IRacing, Project cars and Asseto Corsa, the top 3 racing Sims in the world right now.
PlayStation 4 only supports the Thrust master wheels... The most expensive in the market and not at all the best ones.

But the OP didn't ask about wheels or about what kind of games you play...

On topic...

The PS4 is good, the UI will take a bit of adjusting from a PS3, At first you'll hate it, but then love it. I haven't had any issues with mine, but the controllers can be a little weak I suppose.

Mine has some audio issues with using headphones, but other than that, the controller feels great.

PS+ Is required, but can be useful now, the sales are nice, and there's 2(?) free games available now and then, every month I think.

Just depends on what you want to play.

The 500GB model is the only SKU available, however, it won't void your warranty if you decide to upgrade your HDD. Here are the guidelines that you should consider when upgrading:

1. The disk is a SATA II 2.5" internal drive that the thickness thereof should be less than 9.5mm. (in other words, if it is thick enough for the PS3, then it will work for the PS4.

2. There is a minimum space requirement of 160GB. This is in large part for the OS.

You'll probably will want to upgrade if you plan to install a lot of PS plus games, you can still delete and get them later so It's up to you but eventually you'll probably need a new HDD.
